Katja Hessel (born May 5, 1972 in Nuremberg ) is a Bavarian politician of the FDP . From 2008 to 2013 she was State Secretary in the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology and represented her party as a member of the Bavarian State Parliament . She has been a member of the 19th German Bundestag since 2017 . She has also been Chair of the Finance Committee since February 2020 .

Life

Origin, education and professional career

Katja Hessel was born in Nuremberg in 1972. In 1991 she graduated from high school and then studied law in Erlangen until 1996. In 1996 she passed her first state examination and in 1998 her second state examination. From 1999 she worked as a lawyer in her own law firm, and in the same year she joined the FDP. In 2002 Hessel became a tax consultant.

Political career

Also in 2002, Hessel was elected treasurer of the Central Franconian District Association of her party. From 1999 to 2006 she was the local chairman of the Feucht local association of the Liberals and at the same time was a member of the Nürnberger Land district board until 2007 . She was a member of the Nuremberg District Council from 2002 to 2007.

After moving in 2007, she moved to the district board of the FDP Nuremberg. In the same year he was elected to the presidium of the Bavarian FDP regional association. In the state elections in Bavaria in 2008 , she won a seat in the state parliament; her party entered into a government coalition with the CSU . On October 30, 2008, Hessel became State Secretary in the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology under Martin Zeil and suspended her admission to the bar.

After the FDP failed to return to the state parliament in the 2013 elections , Hessel resigned from the state parliament and from the state government. From January 2014 to October 2018 she was the successor of Jörg Rohde as the chairwoman of the FDP district association Middle Franconia. Since April 2019, Hessel has been a member of the Federal Board of Free Democrats.

On October 15, 2016, Katja Hessel was elected as the top candidate of the FDP Middle Franconia for the 2017 federal election and is also running as a direct candidate in constituency 244 (Nuremberg North) . In the election she was elected to the Bundestag via the state list. She is a full member of the Finance Committee and a deputy member of the Transport and Digital Infrastructure Committee . On February 12, 2020, the Finance Committee elected her to succeed Bettina Stark-Watzinger as Chairwoman.
