Michael Zimmermann (politician)

Michael Zimmermann (born February 9, 1981 in Munich ) is a German political scientist and has been the federal executive director of the FDP since January 2020 .

Career

After graduating from the Amandus-Abendroth-Gymnasium in Cuxhaven and serving as a contract soldier for two years at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe , Zimmermann began studying political science and public law at the Free University of Berlin in 2003 , which he graduated as a political scientist in 2007 completed.

Party and profession

In 2004 Zimmermann began working as a student employee, later as office manager of the FDP member of the Bundestag and chairman of the committee for culture and media of the German Bundestag Hans-Joachim Otto . He followed this in 2009 as a personal advisor to the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology , in which Otto had taken on the role of Parliamentary State Secretary . In 2011 Zimmermann moved to the FDP parliamentary group as personal advisor to the parliamentary group chairman Rainer Brüderle . After the Free Democrats left the Bundestag temporarily in 2013, Zimmermann took up a position as a speaker, and from 2017 as a managing director in the FDP parliamentary group in the North Rhine-Westphalia state parliament . In November 2019, the federal executive of the FDP appointed Michael Zimmermann as federal managing director at the suggestion of federal chairman Christian Lindner . On January 1, 2020, he took up this position as the successor to Marco Mendorf , who moved to the service of the state representation of North Rhine-Westphalia at the federal government .

Michael Zimmermann is a reserve officer in the army and a member of the FDP, the Bundeswehr Social Welfare Service , the WWF and YFU . He is Catholic, married, has one son and has lived in Berlin since 2020 .
