Moritz Heimo Körner (born August 3, 1990 in Wiesbaden ) is a German politician ( FDP ) and has been a member of the European Parliament since 2019 . Before that, he had been a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia since 2017 . As a representative of the FDP MEPs, he has been a member of the FDP Presidium since 2019.

Life

Körner grew up in Langenfeld (Rhineland) and attended the Konrad-Adenauer-Gymnasium there , where he graduated from high school in 2010. After graduating from high school, Körner completed a voluntary social year with the State Sports Association of North Rhine-Westphalia in the sports club RTHC Bayer Leverkusen . There he also worked as a hockey coach, where he led youth teams up to the German championship title. In his private life, Körner has been active in the “Charisma” choir in Mülheim an der Ruhr for several years .

From 2011 to 2014 Moritz Körner studied social sciences at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf and graduated with a bachelor's degree. He then studied political management, public policy and public administration at the NRW School of Governance until March 2017 , from which he graduated with a Master of Arts.

From 2011 to the end of his studies, Körner was a scholarship holder of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom .

In 2008, Körner joined the FDP and the Young Liberals (JuLis) . At JuLis he was district chairman in Mettmann from 2008 to 2011 . In addition, he has been deputy district chairman of the FDP in the Mettmann district since 2009 and was a member of the FDP district parliamentary group. In his hometown of Langenfeld (Rhineland) , Körner is chairman of the FDP. From 2010 to 2018, Körner was a member of the state board of JuLis in North Rhine-Westphalia and has been state chairman since 2013. Since 2014 he has been an elected member of the state board of the FDP in North Rhine-Westphalia.

For the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2017 , Körner ran in the constituency of Mettmann I and as the top candidate of JuLis NRW in 16th place on the state list of the FDP North Rhine-Westphalia. After the election he moved into the Düsseldorf parliament via the list and was the youngest member of the state parliament at the beginning of the 17th legislative period . Within the state parliamentary group, he was university policy spokesman and spokesman for the committee of inquiry into the Amri case .

In November 2018, the state association of the FDP in North Rhine-Westphalia chose Körner as its top candidate for the 2019 European elections . At the FDP's 2019 European Party Congress , he was finally placed on the promising fourth place on the list of his party. He was successfully elected to the European Parliament on May 26, 2019. On June 27, 2019, Daniela Beihl replaced him in the state parliament.

Körner is a member of the Budget Committee and the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament. He is also a member of the Renew Europe delegation for relations with the People's Republic of China and an alternate member of the delegation for relations with India. He is also a member of the EU Parliament's intergroups in the areas of Artificial Intelligence and Digitization, SEARICA (seas, rivers, islands and coastal areas), social economy , LGTBI , animal welfare and conservation, urban environment, anti-corruption, and wine, spirits and food .
