activities

Kılıç works in a Heidelberg law firm specializing in international private law , European law and immigration law. He is a member of the bar associations in Karlsruhe and Ankara . He received his legal training at the University of Ankara and the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg , where he also obtained a Master of Laws .

From 2004 to 2009 he represented the Green Party in the Municipal Council of the city of Heidelberg. Kılıç is in the German-Turkish Lawyers Association and in the Expert Committee on Migration of the Council of Europe . From 1998 to 2008 he was a member of the broadcasting council of Südwestrundfunk and from 2000 to 2009 a member of the advisory board for internal management issues in the Bundeswehr . In addition to legal specialist articles, Kılıç also published numerous political articles and contributions in various regional and national media.

Memet Kılıç ran as a citizen with German and Turkish citizenship in the Bundestag election 2005 as well as in the Bundestag election 2009 in the constituency of Pforzheim for Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen. In 2009 he was elected to the Bundestag via the state list of Baden-Württemberg. He was a member of the Interior Committee and the Petitions Committee . In the general election in 2013 he was not re-elected. In the 2017 federal election , he is running in the Rhein-Neckar constituency.

Positions

Kılıç is Alevi .

In March 2010, Kılıç declined an invitation from the Turkish Prime Minister Erdoğan to an event by the Turkish government in Istanbul, which was intended to motivate politicians of Turkish origin in Germany to do more political work for the interests of the Republic of Turkey, and justified his rejection: “I have the framework for not seen the event. It was a meeting of Turkish representatives and I see myself primarily as a member of the German Bundestag. So I didn't fit in there. "

In February 2012, Kılıç said he was against the upcoming election of Joachim Gauck to the office of Federal President . Gauck destroyed trust with his praise for Sarrazin . "We need real integration and not populist debates," he said in the Frankfurter Rundschau .

In June 2012, Kılıç called the judgment of the Cologne Regional Court on the criminal liability of medically not indicated circumcision of boys for religious reasons “a food for thought that the judiciary in a secular state deserves” and appealed to religious communities to join the social discussion to participate in the question of whether it would not make sense to wait until the boys reached religious maturity before circumcision . Regarding his own sons, he said it might be better if they were allowed to decide for themselves in later years whether or not they wanted to bear the mark of the Muslim religion. The petitions committee of the Bundestag is concerned with whether horses should be branded or whether there might not be more lenient procedures. So the question of circumcising young boys shouldn't be taboo. Criticism from the religious side that a statutory prohibition of circumcision would make Jewish or Muslim life in Germany impossible in the future, Kılıç rejected. This is a "big club" with which the debate about the permissibility of circumcision should be stalled. Kilic supported a cross-faction bill (17/11430), which a group of over 50 members of the Bundestag introduced on November 8, 2012.

On the occasion of the protests in Turkey in 2013 , Kılıç, together with Cem Özdemir and other Green politicians , urged Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to end the violence and allow freedom of expression in Turkey in an open letter . “This senseless violence against people who peacefully exercise their civil rights must come to an end. The elected government of a democratic country that is trying to join the European Union should not see it differently and certainly not accept violence against its citizens with a shrug or even initiate it. "

A trial against Memet Kılıç for " insulting the president " was started in mid-December 2019 , and a search warrant was issued against him by a judge in Ankara . Erdogan's lawyers are demanding his arrest in Germany. In its indictment, the chief public prosecutor described several statements by Kiliç in an interview with the Turkish Internet newspaper “ABC Gazatesi” in July 2017 as “offensive” to the Turkish head of state. In the interview, Kiliç had said, among other things: "The damage that Erdogan has inflicted on Turkey is intolerable." And: "As a politician with Turkish roots, I am very sad that my country was brought into this situation. who brought it into this position as traitors to the fatherland ”.
