Call to take off the headscarf

15 October 2006 Deligöz called in the Bild am Sonntag together with a group of German-Turkish politicians living in Germany Muslim women on to the headscarf store. She called on all democratic forces and above all women of Turkish origin in Germany to defend themselves against this "symbol of the oppression of women" . As a result, she was confronted not only with a press campaign by conservative Turkish newspapers but also with abuse and death threats from radical Muslims. The Islamic Council and the Millî Görüş criticized this call to the effect that all like-minded people should take better care of “ the boards in front of their own heads ”. At a meeting between representatives of Islamic associations, including Ali Kizilkaya from the Islamic Council and representatives of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen , including Deligöz, parliamentary group leader Renate Künast and Wolfgang Wieland , in Berlin on October 31, 2006, one could at least rely on the minimum consensus agree not to question the right to freedom of expression .

Deligöz was attacked hardest by Turkish Islamist circles. Deligöz belongs to the denomination of Alevis , who reject a gender-specific dress code outside of church services, so that Alevi women do not wear a headscarf.
