Axel Schäfer (born August 3, 1952 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German politician ( SPD ).

From September 28, 2010 to December 7, 2017, Axel Schäfer was one of the deputy chairmen of the SPD parliamentary group (see list of deputy group chairmen ), most recently responsible for European Union affairs and economic cooperation and development. He was chairman of the North Rhine-Westphalia regional group of the SPD parliamentary group from March 17, 2009 to September 23, 2015.

Life and work

Schäfer left grammar school in 1968 with FOS maturity and entered the public service . First he completed a two-year administrative internship with the city of Frankfurt am Main until 1970. In 1972 he moved to Bochum , graduated from the study institute for municipal administration (technical college) and worked in various offices, most recently as a consultant in the cultural department. In 1983 he took over the management of the office for the 1984 European elections at Willy Brandt's SPD party executive . He then headed the European office in the SPD district of Western Westphalia until 1994.

Axel Schäfer was the director of a European folk high school in Thuringia from 1999 to 2001 and general secretary of the European Movement Germany eV from 2001 to 2003. Today he is one of three vice-presidents of the civil society network.

Schäfer is married to Gabi Schäfer, 1st mayor and council member in Bochum. The two have an adult son and two grandchildren.

Political party

Schäfer joined the SPD in 1969. From 2000 to 2010 he was on the board of the SPD region Western Westphalia, from 2010 on the state board of the SPD NRW and from 2001 he was a member of the party council .

MP

From 1994 to 1999 Schäfer was a member of the European Parliament . There he was spokesman for the SPE parliamentary group in the institutional committee and sports representative of the SPD group.

He has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2002 . From 2002 to 2005 he was chairman of the subcommittee on European law of the legal committee of the German Bundestag and from 2004 to 2005 deputy spokesman for the “Sport” working group of the SPD parliamentary group .

From 2005 to 2010 he was spokesman for the parliamentary group working group “ European Union Affairs ”, and since 2010 he has been deputy group chairman, initially for the areas of Europe and petitions, then in the 18th Bundestag for the areas of Europe and development cooperation. He is also active on the sports committee .

Schäfer has always entered the Bundestag as a directly elected member of the Bochum I constituency . In the 2013 Bundestag election , he received 44.2% of the first votes (2009: 43%). In the 2017 federal election , Schäfer received 37.2% of the first votes.

He is also a member of the Europa-Union parliamentary group of the German Bundestag .
