He studied as a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, as a Fulbright scholarship holder at Tulane University in New Orleans, and at the Friedrich Alexander University in Erlangen. In 1966/67 he taught at Dillard University in New Orleans, a college attended mainly by African-Americans . After the state exams (history, English, social studies), he first taught at a Bavarian grammar school. From 1975 to 2003 Ammon worked as a lecturer in history and sociology at the preparatory college for foreign students at the Free University of Berlin .

In the 1980s he was involved in the peace movement of that time, u. a. as a representative of the "open letter" of the GDR regime critic Robert Havemann to the Soviet state and party leader Leonid Brezhnev . In his publications, e.g. Partly in cooperation with Peter Brandt and Theodor Schweisfurth , he emphasized the relevance of the “German question” preserved in the block structures for peace in Europe in the debate about the stationing of new medium-range nuclear missiles (“retrofitting”) and the military-strategic deterrent doctrines. His contacts with the independent peace movement in the GDR earned him an entry ban until the fall of the Berlin Wall. Nonetheless, the connection to activists such as Christian Dietrich , Edelbert Richter and Stephan Bickhardt - mediated through the Canadian peace researcher Hans Sinn ( Peace Brigades International [PBI] ) - remained . Until its dissolution in the early 1990s, Ammon belonged to the Political Club Berlin (Working Group for European Cooperation eV).

Ammon published numerous articles and reviews on contemporary history, on the “Left and the National Question”, on the culture of remembrance , on the history of the expulsion of Germans after the Second World War, as well as essays on European and American history. Essays on the history of the German resistance to National Socialism deserve special mention. His contributions appeared a. a. in the Germany Archive , in the Neue Gesellschaft , in: Das Argument , in Merkur , in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , in Die Welt and in the magazines We ourselves and Commune . He is the author of the weekly newspaper Junge Freiheit . Since 2006, his essays and reviews have been published primarily in the online journal Iablis: Yearbook for European Processes . Ammon is a permanent author of the online magazine Globkult, which was founded by his long-term partner and co-author Peter Brandt and has been published by Gunter Weißgerber since January 2020, and is a guest author of the Axis des Guteness . His publications appear regularly on The European .

Ammon is a co-founder and member of the board of trustees of the Deutsche Gesellschaft e. V. to promote political, cultural and social relations in Europe . He is a member of the Kondylis Institute for Cultural Analysis and Alteration Research (Kondiaf). Ammon lives in Berlin .
