politics

From 2003 to June 2007 Nussbaum was Bremen Senator for Finance. After the 2007 mayor elections , he, who was brought into politics by the then mayor Henning Scherf ( SPD ), was to take over the economics and justice department in the senate from mayor Jens Böhrnsen (SPD). Surprisingly, however, Nussbaum waived only one day after his official nomination. The reason he gave was that on the sidelines of the red-green coalition negotiations , he had received a letter from SPD country chief Uwe Beckmeyer , with which he was to be urged to join the party.

On February 19, 2009 Nussbaum was introduced by Klaus Wowereit , the Governing Mayor of Berlin , as the successor to Thilo Sarrazin as the new Berlin Senator for Finance . He took office on May 1, 2009. On December 3, 2009 Nussbaum was elected chairman of the conference of finance ministers for 2010. After the Berlin House of Representatives elections in 2011, Nussbaum was nominated again on November 28, 2011 by Wowereit as Berlin's Senator for Finance in the grand coalition. On October 17, 2014, he announced his resignation for December 11, 2014. He justified this with his advanced age and a personal decision. The election of the SPD mayoral candidate has no influence on this. His successor was Matthias Kollatz-Ahnen in December 2014 .

Since April 16, 2018, Nussbaum has been State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy under Federal Minister Peter Altmaier
