La Golondrina
La Golondrina (German: The Swallow ) is the title of a popular Mexican song from 1862 .
history
The song's composer, Narciso Serradel Sevilla (1843–1910), comes from Alvarado in Veracruz , Mexico and was a doctor. During the Mexican war of intervention in 1862, he fought alongside General Zaragoza against the French troops, was captured and deported to France. During that time he wrote La Golondrina based on a text by Niceto de Zamacois . In 1865 (according to other sources 1896 ) Serradel returned to Mexico to work as a doctor again. He also conducted military bands and composed. La Golondrina remained his greatest success as a wistful homeland song and became known worldwide.
In the United States , Victor Records New York released a wax roll recording with the singer Señor Carl Francisco in June 1906 . In 1960 an English version with the title She Wears My Ring followed with a text by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant , sung first by Jimmy Sweeney , then by Roy Orbison , Elvis Presley and others.
In Germany , the song under the title Du shall not cry became a number one hit through Heintje in August 1968 . The basis for this was a version published in 1949 as Das Lied der Taube by Ralph Maria Siegel with the collaboration of Rolf Marbot . Also in 1968 Udo Jürgens published a version of the song under the title Your Last Letter .
There are also numerous instrumental recordings , including a guitar version from 1928 with Paul Whiteman and a guitar version with Chet Atkins in 1955 .
