Alvarado (officially: Ilustre, Heroica y Generosa Ciudad y Puerto de Alvarado ) is a city in the Mexican state of Veracruz . The city is the seat of the Municipio Alvarado . It is located 64 km from Veracruz at the mouth of the Río Papaloapan or the Laguna de Alvarado in the Gulf of Mexico .
In 2010 there were 23,128 inhabitants in the city.
In pre- Hispanic times the city was called Atlizintla . In 1518 the conquistador Pedro de Alvarado entered the town of Atlizintla and named the city and the river after himself. In 1563 Juan de Sahagún expanded the port of Alvarado and made it possible for larger ships to dock.
The most important products that are shipped from Alvarado all over the world are coffee, fruit and sugar. The economy of this region is focused on fishing and agriculture.
The film Die Haughmütigen ( Les Orgueilleux , German alternative title Stay before Vera Cruz ) with Gérard Philipe and Michèle Morgan was shot here in 1953 .
