Franz von Merveldt (born July 14, 1844 in Meidling ; † January 27, 1916 in Vienna ) was an Austrian civil servant and politician.

Life

Franz von Merveldt was one of three children from the marriage of Count Maximilian Merveldt (* March 8, 1797, † May 1849) with Octavia, b. Countess Czernin von und zu Chudenitz (born December 13, 1802, † May 11, 1879) emerged.

Count Merveldt began his civil service career in Lower Austria , where he worked for a time as a district commissioner in St. Pölten . Then followed the appointment as district captain in Salzburg . In 1883 the count was appointed to the state government in Klagenfurt as a councilor, where he served until 1886. In the same year he was transferred to Salzburg with the title of court counselor and to Graz in 1887 . This was followed by the appointment of regional president (country chiefs) of Silesia . In this capacity he worked until 1889, then he was appointed governor of Austria on the Enns in Linz by the emperor . On July 26, 1890, he was appointed governor of Tyrol with Vorarlberg to Innsbruck from this post . His term of office in Tyrol passed without any particularities. He was followed by Baron Erwin von Schwartzenau , who previously worked in the Ministry of the Interior .

During his tenure he received numerous proofs of imperial recognition, especially when the monarch toured Tyrol in the autumn of 1893. With the imperial resolution of December 7, 1901, Count Merveldt, who was the bearer of the Grand Cross of the Franz Joseph Order and several foreign orders, was put into temporary retirement "with full recognition of his excellent services rendered to the state with loyal devotion and sacrifice" .
