Life

Rudolf was the son of Count Franz von Meran and Theresia Countess von Lamberg (1836–1913), thus the grandson of Archduke Johann . After a military career had failed due to an injury, he entered the civil service after studying law.

From 1909 to 1911 he served as district captain of Bregenz , before he became regional president of Bukovina , at the other end of the monarchy, from 1912 to 1917 . As a distant cousin of the emperor, the new governor was welcomed positively in the capital city of Chernivtsi , he interfered more in political affairs than his predecessors, such as Oktavian Regner von Bleyleben .

During the two Russian conquests of Bukovina in World War I , he withdrew to Vienna. From January 13, 1917 to October 20, 1917 Meran was governor (Landeschef) in Austria above the Enns . His brief work in Upper Austria is described as realistic and social. From November 20, 1917 to November 15, 1918, Merano was the last governor of Tyrol .

In 1917 he married Johanna Princess von Auersperg (1890–1967) at Goldegg Castle . The couple lived with two sons and a daughter at their Schenna Castle near Merano .
