Life

Franz Joseph, Reichsgraf, later Prince, von Lamberg and Landgrave von Leuchtenberg, born on October 28, 1637 in Vienna and baptized there the following day in the Michaelerkirche , came from the older, now extinct line of those von Lamberg . He was the eldest son of Count Johann Maximilian von Lamberg from his marriage to Judith Rebecca Eleonora Countess Wrbna. The Passau prince-bishop and cardinal Johann Philipp von Lamberg (1651–1712) was his younger brother.

Since his father Johann Maximilian was the tutor of the later Emperor Leopold I for some time , he was brought up with him and remained friends with him throughout his life. After his father's return from Spain, Franz Joseph became Imperial Chamberlain in 1662 and Councilor of the Imperial Court in 1664 . As such, he was frequently assigned diplomatic missions by his father, who directed relations between the Viennese court and Spain: in 1667 and 1668 at the courts in Madrid , Paris , Cologne and Regensburg , and again in Spain in 1676 and 1677. In 1666 he was sent to the bride of Emperor Leopold I, Margarita Theresa of Spain , to the Venetian border to accompany her to Vienna. Since his missions were mostly ceremonial tasks, he was often awarded the medals of the corresponding countries: 1667 with the Spanish Order of St. Jacob , 1694 with the Knightly Order of the Golden Fleece . However, his influence on Viennese politics was small.

In 1686 the Emperor appointed him Real Privy Councilor and Governor of Austria ob der Enns (confirmed by Joseph I in 1705 and Charles VI in 1712 ), and in 1704 as Council of State and Conference. His eldest son Leopold Matthias , a close confidante of Emperor Joseph I, achieved the dignity of imperial prince in 1707 and in 1709 received the imperial county of Leuchtenberg in Bavaria. But since he died in 1711, only 44 years old, the rare case occurred that his father, Franz Joseph, who was still alive, succeeded him in the dignity of a prince (diploma of March 22, 1711), from whom she was named after his the next year, 1712 , passed death to his third son Franz Anton .

Further children from the marriage in Prague in 1663 with Anna Maria Countess Trautmannsdorf-Weinsberg (1642–1727), a daughter of the Bohemian governor Adam Matthias von Trauttmansdorff (1617–1684) were the Passau prince-bishop and cardinal Joseph Dominikus von Lamberg (1680–1761 ), whose suffragan Franz Alois von Lamberg (1692–1732), the Tyrolean Oberstlandjägermeister Johann Philipp von Lamberg (1684–1735), the imperial music count Hans Ferdinand von Lamberg (1689–1764) and Hans Adam von Lamberg (1677–1708).
