Leopold Matthias von Lamberg (born February 20, 1667 in Vienna ; † March 10, 1711 ibid) was Colonel Stable Master of Emperor Joseph I and from 1708 to 1711 Landgrave von Leuchtenberg .

Life

Leopold Matthias Sigismund, imperial count (since 1707 imperial prince) of Lamberg, baron on Ortenegg and Ottenstein , belonged to the noble Lamberg family from Carinthia and Carniola, who were wealthy in Upper Austria ( Steyr ). He was the third child and the eldest son of Count Franz Joseph von Lamberg -Steyr (1637–1712) from his marriage to Anna Maria Countess Trautmannsdorf-Weinsberg (1642–1727), a daughter of the Bohemian governor Adam Matthias von Trauttmansdorff (1617– 1684). His brothers were Hans Adam von Lamberg (1677–1708), Prince Franz Anton von Lamberg (1678–1759), Cardinal Joseph Dominikus von Lamberg (1680–1761), his suffragan Bishop Franz Alois von Lamberg (1692–1732), as well as the Count Johann Philipp von Lamberg (1684–1735) and Johann Ferdinand von Lamberg (1689–1764).

Count Matthias was in close contact with the imperial family from the start. Emperor Leopold I himself was his godfather and he was close friends with the ten years younger Crown Prince and later Emperor Josef I. Carried by his favor, he climbed the steps of the hierarchy of offices (white). In August 1689 he was sworn in as the first chamberlain to the crown prince , and in 1692 he was the imperial chamber councilor. In 1699 he took over the management of King Joseph I's hunting activities, became a knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1700 and, on January 13, 1702, hereditary chief land hunter for Austria ob der Enns , after the death of Prince Leopold Ignaz von Dietrichstein on July 15, 1708, he was also chief stables master . On November 1, 1707, Emperor Josef I elevated him to the rank of imperial prince, hereditary according to the right of birthright.

After elector Max Emanuel during the Spanish War of Succession in outlawry had fallen, looked at Joseph I. the Landgraviate Leuchtenberg as home fallen Reichslehen and belehnte 1708 Prince Matthias with her. He was declared at the Reichstag on July 11, 1709 as the Holy Roman Empire's Landgrave of Leuchtenberg and immediate Imperial Prince, as he had a seat and vote on the Reichstag.

Prince Matthias was always around the emperor, who did not want to be without him on hunts, tournaments and festivals. However, his political influence was small. He did not succeed in getting his uncle, the Passau prince-bishop and cardinal Johann Philipp von Lamberg , to gain a foothold again at the Viennese court.

He died of heart disease in Vienna on March 10, 1711, only 44 years old and five weeks before his imperial friend. He was buried in the Lamberg family crypt in the Augustiner Hofkirche in Vienna. Since his two sons had died young and childless before him, the dignity of the imperial prince and the county of Leuchtenberg fell to his 74-year-old father, Franz Joseph von Lamberg, and after his death on November 2, 1712, to his brother Franz Anton. The Landgraviate was returned to the Bavarian Elector in 1714 as part of the Rastatt Peace .
