Ken Darby

Ken Darby (born May 13, 1909 in Hebron , Nebraska , † January 24, 1992 in Sherman Oaks , California ) was an American composer for film music, music writer and arranger , who was awarded three times with the Oscar .

Life

Even in his childhood he was very interested in music and played several instruments. From 1939 he worked in the film business, wrote and sang songs a. a. for The Wizard of Oz . In the 1940s he was the director of music for Walt Disney .

Darby worked closely with Alfred Newman . Together they were awarded two Oscar and nominated three times for this award.

In 1957 Darby and Alfred Newman were awarded the Oscar in the category Best Score in the Musical Category for the film The King and I. Two years later, the two received a nomination for music on South Pacific .

In 1960 Darby was honored a second time with the Oscar. This time together with André Previn for their music on Porgy and Bess . In addition, the two received a Grammy Award for the best soundtrack.

In 1962 and 1964 there was an Oscar nomination for Almond Eyes and Lotus Blossoms (1961) and That Was the Wild West . On this production he worked again with Alfred Newman. He won his third Oscar again in collaboration with Newman in 1968 for Camelot - Am Hofe König Arthur in the field of Scoring of Music, Adaptation or Treatment .

Darby was married and had two children.
