Butterflies in the stomach is a rock - ballad of the German musician Herbert Grönemeyer , which was also written by him and produced. It was released on February 4, 1985 as the third and final single from the album 4630 Bochum , on which the song originally appeared in May 1984. At that time, the song was not particularly successful in the charts - the single reached number 44. However, the song was often played live by him and often covered, particularly successful by Oli P. in 1998, and is therefore considered a classic of German-language rock and pop music . Oli P's version reached number one among the German, Austrian andSwiss charts and is one of the best-selling single releases in Germany .

Music and lyrics

It is a rock ballad, which in the original version is accompanied by keyboards and strings from the synthesizer . An electric guitar plays some leads, and an acoustic guitar solo can be heard. In terms of content, it is about a relationship with a loved one who has already turned away internally: "Caress me mechanically / completely sterile / ice-cold hand / I dread you". The only thing left for the protagonist to do is to end the relationship for good: "Let go of me, leave me alone, so that this comes to an end".

Origin and reception

Grönemeyer wrote planes in his stomach himself and also produced the song. The single was released on February 4, 1985 by EMI . On the B-side is the song Now or Never . For the English-language album What's All This he recorded an English version with Airplanes in My Head . In 1988 a music video was shot for this under the direction of Peter Scammell. A new version appeared on the Special Edition of Schiffsverkehr as well as on I Walk .

Live versions appeared on Unplugged Herbert , Grönemeyer Live , Stand der Dinge , Mensch Live , 12 Live and Ö-Tour '88 , among others . An orchestral version was also released in 2000.

Grönemeyer's single reached number 44 in the German charts and was placed for ten weeks. The orchestral version in 2000 reached number 42 and was in the German charts for nine weeks.
