Mensch is the eleventh studio album by the German musician Herbert Grönemeyer . It was released on Grönland Records in August 2002 .

It is considered to be Grönemeyer's most commercially successful album. With over 3.1 million copies sold, it is the best-selling album in Germany .

The album went platinum for the first time even before its release due to pre-orders and reached number one in the German album charts . The single Mensch was Grönemeyer's first title with which he reached number one in the German single charts .

History of origin

Four years had passed since the previous album Bleibt alles anders . Half a year after its publication, one of Grönemeyer's brothers and his wife Anna Henkel-Grönemeyer died within a few days, after which he withdrew for a long time. According to his own admission, he started making music again, fearing that he would lose her too. For him, human became an aid in dealing with grief; so the songs mainly deal with the subject of grief. The entire album was produced in Grönemeyer's adopted home of London , again with Alex Silva . The title Demo (Last Day) , as the title suggests, was recorded the day before the album was sent to the pressing plant.

Track list

All songs were written by Herbert Grönemeyer, except for Viertel Vor by Herbert Grönemeyer and Alex Silva.
