Grönland is an independent record label founded in 1999 by singer, music producer and actor Herbert Grönemeyer . For a long time the head office was in London , now the label is based in Berlin .

The board members also include the Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn , who is a friend of Grönemeyer and who has become known through work for Depeche Mode and U2 , among others .

history

Grönemeyer actively designed the TV series Pop 2000 , which tells the story of 50 years of pop music and youth culture in Germany. In connection with this work - and in order to be able to read the albums of the Krautrock group Neu! to release on CD - he founded the record label Grönland Records. According to information provided by the label, the aim of the label is to give artists greater freedom in the implementation of their projects, including marketing. Greenland had its own studio in the closed Mayfair Studios in London . a. Radiohead , Coldplay and Blur recorded. With Polar Bear Publishing, Grönland Records operates its own music publisher , which is also available to external artists for publications.

Herbert Grönemeyer himself ran the label together with René Renner, who was previously responsible for A&R at EMI , until the end of 2008 . The label has been based entirely in Berlin since 2009 and is looked after by label manager Mareike Hettler. Since the 2002 album Mensch , Grönemeyer's own releases have also been released by Grönland, but his long-standing record company EMI and, since 2014, Vertigo and Universal continue to take over the distribution.
