Mayfair Studios

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mayfair Studios were a recording studio in Primrose Hill, London , England . The studios were originally located in the London borough of Mayfair in the 1960s , after which they are named. Many well-known artists and musicians such as Tina Turner , The Clash , Pink Floyd , the Bee Gees , Nigel Kennedy and Kroke , as well as The Smiths used the studios to record their music in the past.

history

Before 1975 the recording studios belonged to Ryemuse Ltd. and were called Spot Studios . They were at 64 South Molton Street in Mayfair, above the local drug store. John Hudson was employed there as a technical manager. He previously worked for the BBC , where he was responsible for broadcasting live performances for TV programs such as Jimi Hendrix Color Me Pop or Match of the Day . During the 1970s , Hudson was the sound engineer at Mayfair, responsible for many successful records, including "Vienna" by Ultravox , " Fade to Gray " by Visage (with Steve Strange) and "Shang-A-Lang" by the Bay City Rollers which was produced by Phil Coulter .

In 1977 John Hudson and his wife Kate took over the management of the company. In 1979 they finally acquired the recording studio. In 1980 they moved to Sharpleshall Street on Primrose Hill. The studios were reopened there as the address at 64 South Molton Street was to be sold. Hudson was also significantly involved in the new concept of the recording studios, but the studio designers Eddie Veale and Ken Shearer (acoustic advisor at the Royal Albert Hall ) also provided the ideas. Jim Crokett of Crockett Associates was called in to plan and design the soundproofing for Studio 1 and also acted as receptionist. Initially, the new facility consisted of just two studios, which were expanded to six over the next 30 years.

In April 1980, five albums were listed in the Music Week charts in the first week at the new location, which were recorded by John Hudson in the old Mayfair Studios. This triumph spread to the new studio complex in Primrose Hill and sparked a 30-year streak of success for Mayfair Studios and the artists who recorded there. Finally, the business expanded until the famous studios 1, 2 and 3 were united under one roof. The rooms were used by journalists, producers and artists such as Matt Rowe from the Spice Girls , the producer team Robbie Williams and Guy Chambers as well as Herbert Grönemeyer and his producer Alex Silva . Over the years a long line of hit albums has accumulated from a remarkable and extensive line-up of artists and producers. The full list of all of the studios' hit albums can be found on the official John Hudson Mayfair website.

In 2008 Mayfair Studios closed. The details are discussed in the book "What's Mayfair got to do with It?" There is now speculation around the world about insurance companies that have failed to pay legitimate monetary claims, and lawyers and accountants who have failed to meet their obligations. These are said to be responsible for the closure of one of the world's most respected and popular recording studios.
