The Festival Internacional de Cine en Guadalajara is the largest and most important film festival in Mexico . It has been held annually in March in the city of Guadalajara since 1986 . The festival has a focus on Mexican and Latin American film, showing feature films , documentaries , shorts and children's films. The prizes are awarded by an international jury, although the Festival Internacional de Cine en Guadalajara is not accredited by the Fédération Internationale des Associations de Producteurs de Films . The film screenings also take place in different places in the city under the open sky. The Guadalajara Film Festival played an important role in Mexican film, especially in the late 1980s, as it supported and re-initiated the careers of filmmakers such as Arturo Ripstein , María Félix and Jaime Humberto Hermosillo . In the different years of the festival there was an international focus, for example on Argentine film, Chinese film and Italian film. With retrospectives about were Pedro Almodovar , Vittorio Storaro , Monxto Armendáriz , Theo Angelopulos , Fernando Trueba , Patricio Guzman and Atom Egoyan honored.

In addition to the official prizes, the Premio del Público, the Premio Mezcal, a FIPRESCI Prize and the Premio FEISAL are also awarded. The Premio Mayahuel de Plata has been awarded to an outstanding personality in Mexican film since 2003, and the Premio Guadalajara since 2007, honoring a Latin American personality who has influenced international film.
