Time selection of the best 100 films from 1923 to 2005

The Time selection of the best 100 films from 1923 to 2005 (Time's All-Time 100 Movies) is a non-ranking list of films compiled in 2005 by well-known film critics Richard Schickel and Richard Corliss and published on the US website - Time magazine was published. The compilation received a lot of attention, so the page with the list was visited around 7.8 million times in the first week alone and the magazine received thousands of commendatory and critical letters.

Corliss and Schickel initially each created their own lists, which they then processed into a joint list in a discussion process that lasted months. Only films from 1923, the year Time magazine was founded, could be recorded. The oldest film on the list is therefore Sherlock, Jr. (1924), the youngest Finding Nemo (2003). Films of all genres and countries could be selected for the list, so that a great diversity and representativeness should be achieved - although according to Corliss it is difficult to achieve with a list of 100 films, all trends and areas of film history are sufficient over a period of 80 years to represent. Corliss explained that one could possibly criticize the fact that Leni Riefenstahl is only represented by one woman as a director, and that the first decades in particular were dominated by American films. There are just over 100 films, as a few related productions - such as the first two " The Godfather " films or the Dekalog film cycle - share one of the 100 seats.

With Metropolis , Olympia , Aguirre, Der Zorn Gottes , Berlin Alexanderplatz and Der Himmel über Berlin , five German film productions are represented in the list. It also includes films by directors Billy Wilder , Ernst Lubitsch , Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau , William Wyler , Josef von Sternberg and Edgar G. Ulmer from Germany and Austria , which they shot in Hollywood after they emigrated.
