Alfred E. Green (1921)

Alfred E. Green (sometimes Alfred E. Greene , Alfred Green or Al Green ; born July 11, 1889 in Perris , California , † September 4, 1960 in Hollywood ) was an American film director and silent film actor.

Life

Alfred E. Green began his film career in 1912 as an actor with the Selig Polyscope Company . Some time later he became assistant to director Colin Campell, soon to direct short films himself . He had his breakthrough thanks to some films with Mary Pickford during her time at First National , including as co-director of Little Lord Fountleroy from 1921. Green stayed with the company for the next few years, working with stars like Colleen Moore , with whom he was filmed some of her greatest hits, as well as Thomas Meighan and Wallace Reid . His career took a turn for the worse towards the end of the silent movie era, but with the merger of First National with Warner Brothers , he experienced a new upswing. This was mainly due to his friendship with George Arliss , whom he led through almost all of his sound films. Her first film, Disraeli , won an Oscar for best actor for Arliss . He subsequently worked with some of the studio's top stars such as Edward G. Robinson ( Silver Dollars , I Loved a Woman ), John Barrymore ( The Man from Blankley’s ), Barbara Stanwyck ( Baby Face , one of the most famous Pre-Code films , and A Lost Lady based on Willa Cather 's novel of the same name) and Ruth Chatterton , for whose Warners debut in The Rich Are Always With Us he was responsible in 1932 and which received very good reviews.

At the height of his fame, Alfred E. Green was chosen as the greatest director of 1929–1930 in Film Daily magazine's annual election of the ten best directors. The next four places went to King Vidor , Clarence Brown , Lionel Barrymore and Ernst Lubitsch . Most of Green's films were routine productions, especially during the 1930s, but occasionally he managed to combine commerce and art. In 1935, Bette Davis won her first Oscar for the lead actress for appearing in Green's drama Dangerous . However, Green was also responsible for one of her worst films ever: The Golden Arrow from the following year, which, along with other bad scripts, contributed to the famous trial that the actress started and lost against Warner Brothers in England that year. Kay Francis made one of her few comedies, The Goose and the Gander, directed by Green . Green has made almost exclusively B-films since the middle of the decade, but in 1946 he had a surprise hit for Columbia Pictures with the film The Jazz Singer , which grossed almost eight million US dollars at the box office and made Larry Parks a star. The success could not be repeated and Green has staged exclusively for television since the mid-1950s . From 1955 he was responsible for a total of 46 episodes of the series The Millionaire , in which Paul Frees gave away a million dollars in the role of a generous millionaire in each episode. In 1958 he retired from directing.

Private life

Alfred Green was married to the silent film actress Vivian Reed and they had three children. The son Hilton A. Green (1929-2013) worked as a film producer and assistant director.

He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame . Alfred E. Green died in Hollywood on September 4, 1960.
