Mani Ratnam (actually G. Subramaniam ; Tamil : மணிரத்னம் ; born June 2, 1956 in Madurai , Tamil Nadu ) is an Indian screenwriter , film producer and film director .

Life

Mani Ratnam is the son of the film producer Gopalratnam. He graduated from the University of Madras and received a management degree from Bajaj Institute in Mumbai. At first he also worked in this profession, but in 1983 he turned to the film business and had his directorial debut with Pallavi Anu Pallavi . Mani Ratnam had his breakthrough with Mouna Ragam (1986). The film is about a woman who mourned her deceased boyfriend and was forced into an arranged marriage by her family . After only seven days, the woman asks her husband for a divorce. He accepts this request and goes with her to intend to divorce. There they learn that they must have been married for at least a year before they can get a divorce. But during this waiting period, the couple fall in love. Mani Ratnam's next film, Nayakan (1987), is a successful gangster film and was the only Tamil film to be included in the Time list All times - best 100 movies .

With Roja (1992) Mani Ratnam became known throughout India . The film is a romantic thriller against the backdrop of the Kashmir conflict . The successful composer AR Rahman , with whom Mani Ratnam later collaborated several times, made his debut with this film.

Mani Ratnam's first Hindi film Dil Se (1998) was musically and visually compelling, but the plot is confusing; Critics consider it an artistic low point in Mani Ratnam's career. With Kannathil Muthamittal (2002) he was able to build on his old qualities again. Mani Ratnam often envisages a mix of debutants and stars for the cast of his films.

Mani Ratnam ran the Madras Talkies production company in Chennai with his brother G. Srinivasan . His films won several awards in India and his films can also be seen at many international festivals. He has been married to actress Suhasini since 1989 . His brother G. Venkateswaran was also active in the film business. In 2002 Maniratnam was awarded the Padma Shri .
