Saathiya ( Hindi , साथिया, Sāthiyā, roughly translated: life partner or soulmate ) is an Indian Bollywood film that is both romance and drama. Saathiya was released on December 20, 2002, with Vivek Oberoi and Rani Mukerji starring. The film is director Shaad Ali's debut and the soundtrack was composed by AR Rahman . Saathiya is a remake of the Tamil film called Alaipayuthey (2000) directed by Mani Ratnam .
Saathiya is about the life of the two main characters after the wedding and tells of their difficulties and problems after romance has given way to everyday life. The story is told in retrospect.
In Germany, the film was broadcast on May 13, 2006 under the German title Sehnsucht nach dir in an abridged version as a free TV premiere on the TV channel RTL II .

Aditya, a law student, comes from a respected, wealthy family. He falls in love with the medical student Suhani, whose parents finance their studies despite their simple circumstances. When they first meet, the two are not impressed with each other. But in retrospect that changes when Suhani doesn't want to disappear from Aditya's head. So he goes on a search and finds her. After long courtship for her, he decides to openly express his marriage intentions.
When Aditya's parents want to ask for Suhani's hand, the social difference comes up, mutual insults lead to an argument and the agreement for this connection is refused by both sides. The lovers cannot grasp the deadlocked fronts and henceforth meet secretly. They still want to cement their love for one another in a marriage and decide to tell their parents about it at a later, more suitable time.
Suhani's older sister Dina gets a marriage proposal, which makes her parents very happy. But the future father-in-law wants to marry his younger son to Suhani at the same time, so she finally has to confess that she already has a husband. The family seeking the bride is offended and withdraws its offer; Suhani's parents are so upset by this scandal that they cast their daughter out. Aditya also wants to finally reveal the truth at home, but his father is completely upset about this disobedience and expels him from the house. The newly wed couple is now looking for a small apartment without family support, which they pay from Aditya's low salary from his newly established office.
Everyday life soon catches up with the couple in love; the many romantic attentions have to give way to routine activities and duties. Suhani in particular worries whether Aditya still has the same deep feelings for her or whether the break with their families was not too high a price for their love. One day when she watches Aditya on the other side of the street hugging another woman, her doubts increase. But instead of confronting her husband, she accuses him of a lack of respect and questions her entire marriage. Aditya therefore has no opportunity to explain that it was her sister whom he had met to re-establish contact with the former suitor.
Only the next day does Dina tell her that she has become engaged and that this is solely thanks to Aditya. Overjoyed, Suhani wants to rush to her husband immediately to clear up any misunderstandings, but she is hit by a car. She is taken to hospital unconscious, where her identity cannot be clarified at first. The woman who was behind the wheel of the accident vehicle is married to a very influential man who uses his contacts immediately so that the story does not get out into the open. Aditya, beside herself with worry, is informed of the whereabouts of his wife by the police chief late at night. In the hospital he wants to confront the accident guilty party, but in the end Suhani regains consciousness and the grief is forgotten.
music
The score was composed by AR Rahman and the lyrics were written by Gulzar . Since the Tamil soundtrack of Alaipayuthey , the template for this remake, comes from Rahmans pen, he used most of the compositions. He only added two new songs, Mere Yaar Mila De and Naina Milaike .

- Both Shahrukh Khan and Tabu have guest appearances in the film.
