You Raise Me Up (English for "You encourage me") is a pop song by Rolf Løvland and Brendan Graham from 2001, which was successful in numerous cover versions. The most famous versions come from Josh Groban (2004) and Westlife (2005).

History of origin and publication

You Raise Me Up was written in 2001 by Norwegian Rolf Løvland for his duo Secret Garden . It was originally intended to be an instrumental version called Silent Song . Løvland's mother died during the production of the song, and so the piece was premiered in an instrumental version at her funeral. Løvland was inspired by Irish folk music and also wanted an Irish singer for the song. The first recordings were made with Johnny Logan . For various reasons the version could not be used, so the final version will be sung by another Irish singer, Brian Kennedy . The lyrics of the song were written by the Irish writer and composer Brendan Graham at Løvland's request . Løvland had read his novel The Whitest Flower and was of the opinion that Graham could write a timeless and immortal text for his song. The pop song is also interpreted by gospel choirs and Christian music groups.

In 2007, at a concert by Josh Groban, the resemblance to the song Söknuður by Jóhann Helgason was noticed . While Løvland insisted that he composed the melody himself, it has been suggested by others that he may have heard the song while living in Iceland. In 2018, Helgason sued Universal for infringement of its copyrights.

2001 the song was released on the album Once in a Red Moon by Secret Garden and reached number one in the singles charts in Norway, but initially had little success abroad. It was only with the new recording by Josh Groban in 2004 that the song's international popularity grew. In the following years the song was played again and again, now more than 500 times, by artists such as B. Susan Boyle , the boy band Westlife , Il Divo , Michael Ball , Celtic Woman , Daniel O'Donnell , the Dutch pop star winner Wesley Klein, Phil Driscoll and Lena Park . The song landed in the charts again and again and made it to number one in various countries. In 2006, You Raise Me Up was the first song to have scores over 20,000 times on the musicnotes.com website. downloaded. In the same year, the Irish state channel RTÉ broadcast a documentary about the phenomenon You Raise Me Up . In 2007, Ireland's Hot Press Magazine named it the “Ten Greatest Songs of All Time” list, alongside classics by Van Morrison and U2 .

The song is often used in television movies, commercials, talent competitions, concerts, charities, and at funerals. Brian Kennedy sang the piece at the funeral of the soccer player George Best , and Josh Groban at the American Super Bowl for the seven casualties of the space shuttle Columbia . Other television guest appearances such as Josh Grobans for Oprah Winfrey's 50th birthday as well as his appearance with the African children's choir on American Idol Gives Back , the performance of the song by Secret Garden and Westlife at the Nobel Prize ceremony for Mohamed El Baradei and in 2008 the performance of Celtic Woman in White Haus increased the popularity of the song even further. Even David Garrett is now heard on the radio sometimes.
