Lena Park (born March 23, 1978 in Los Angeles ; Korean name: 박정현 , Park Jung-hyun ) is a Korean - American R&B and soul singer with great popularity in Asia, mainly in South Korea and Japan .

Life

Lena Park grew up in Los Angeles as the oldest of three children of a Korean pastor family. She took an active part in the gospel choir from childhood and participated in various singing competitions. In 1989, at the age of 13, she won her first prize in the Downey Way Outer Broadway Talent Contest , which she repeated the following year. In 1993 she took part in the big gospel singer contest and again won first place. This award enabled her to perform for the first time on an American gospel album called Crying Inside, Dying Inside . She won other awards and took a. a. participated in the Gospel Music Festival in Chicago .

In 1997 she began studying theater and acting at the University of Los Angeles. During her studies she gave continuous performances and in the following year she released her first album Piece in South Korea, on which she worked for two years. It sold 500,000 times.

In 1999 her second album A Second Helping was released; 2000 the third album Naturally .

After a year off, during which she concentrated on her studies in the United States, she returned in 2002 with her fourth album, Op.4 . The single 꿈 에 (In the dream) helped her breakthrough in Asia, such as Singapore or Hong Kong, and from then on she also enjoyed great popularity in Japan. At the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan , she was chosen by the South Korean government to represent the opening and closing anthems. Together with the bands Brown Eyes , Chemistry and Sowelu , she sang the title song for the world championship.

In 2005 she released her fifth album On & On and in 2007 her sixth album Come To Where I Am .

Since 2006 she has been enrolled as a student at Columbia University in New York .
