To the Sea is the fifth album by the American guitarist and songwriter Jack Johnson . It was released on May 28, 2010 and contains 13 songs. The first single You and Your Heart was released on April 22, 2010.
Music genre
On the album the acoustic guitar takes a back seat, the band Jack Johnsons can be heard more than before.
Emergence
On January 19, 2010 it was announced on the artist's homepage that he was working on a new album with his band. On February 1, 2010, June 1, 2010 was given as the publication date. The album was recorded within three weeks at Johnson's own solar- powered studios The Mango Tree in Hawaii and the Solar Powered Plastic Plant in Los Angeles . It was recorded in a room, with Johnson's aim to use as few overdubs as possible and to record the sound of a band playing and the instruments "flowing into each other". To the Sea was released on Johnson's own label Brushfire Records . The first single You and Your Heart had previously been released on radio and iTunes.
Johnson related the album title to a father who led his son to the sea, with the water representing the subconscious. It's about looking below the surface and understanding yourself. The album is about how he feels about his three children as well as about being his father's son.
reception
The album received mostly good reviews. Eberhard Dobler from Laut.de wrote that you can hear that Jack Johnson would rather indulge in the natural rhythm of the waves than simply follow a monetary logic. This is also good and right. However, no “sack full of surprises” can be heard. The plate was rated three out of five stars. Allmusic gave the album four out of five stars in the person of Stephen Thomas Erlewine. It is a “better” pop record, an album by a “soft rock superstar”. Even if the "politely grooving" band increased the pace a bit, there would be no sweating.
