Life

His parents were elementary school teachers. His father died a few months after his birth as a soldier. After attending elementary school in Trofaiach and the federal grammar school in Leoben he studied at the University of Graz mathematics and at the Technical University of Graz Descriptive Geometry and received his doctorate in 1969 at Fritz Hohenberg to Dr phil. in mathematics, astronomy and philosophy. In 1971 he completed his habilitation at the Technical University of Graz. As the successor to Heinz Horninger , Hellmuth Stachel was a university professor for geometry at the Montanuniversität Leoben from 1979 to 1980 . In 1980 he was appointed full professor at the Vienna University of Technology. Professor Stachel has been married since 1966 and has two grown children.

Hellmuth Stachel was visiting professor in China twice, in August 1984 at the South China University of Technology in Guangzhou and in October 1989 at Tongji University in Shanghai .

Professor Stachel also took on roles in the International Society for Geometry and Graphics (ISGG). In 1990 he was elected Chairman of the Society and from 1994 he was Vice President of the Society. In 1996 he created an international scientific journal, the Journal for Geometry and Graphics, and has been a senior editor ever since. The aim of this journal is to promote scientific research, teaching and methodology in the field of geometric graphics by disseminating new results. His retirement took place on October 1, 2011.

Hellmuth Stachel wrote three specialist books (in collaboration with other scholars) and about 120 scientific articles on classical and descriptive geometry, kinematics and computer-aided design . He studied flexible polyhedra in the Euclidean space and in the Lobachevsky space .

Honourings and prices

In 1991 Hellmuth Stachel was elected a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . In 1993 he received the "German-Austrian University Software Award" for the development of CAD 3D educational programs, in 2004 the Steve M. Slaby Award. On November 1, 2010 Hellmuth Stachel received an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Dresden .
