Watkin Tudor Jones (born September 26, 1974 in Johannesburg , South Africa ), better known as Ninja (or also as Max Normal , Waddy Jones or MC Totally Rad ), is a South African musician , record producer , performer, concept and media artist and actor . He gained international recognition with his rap - Rave - Formation Die Antwoord .

Career

Musical career

Jones released his first rap albums back in the 1990s. At the beginning of the 2000s he was under his stage name Max Normal as one of the most popular and talented rappers in South Africa and was regularly compared to Eminem and referred to as "the South African Eminem". In 2002, at the height of his fame, he broke up the Max Normal group to collaborate with others on his The Constructus Corporation project . This resulted in the first artistic collaboration with his partner Yolandi Visser , which still exists today. The Constructus Corporation was also dissolved in 2003 after the release of the concept album The Ziggurat in June 2002, which included an 88-page graphic novel . In 2005 there was a reunification of Max Normal under the new name MaxNormal.TV , with a different line-up, this time with Visser among others. In 2008 this was dissolved and went over to Die Antwoord . Since then, Jones has appeared under the pseudonym Ninja and, as in his previous projects, is considered the "head" of the group. With Die Antwoord he achieved worldwide success, which continues to this day. After the release of the fifth album The House of Zef (2020), this is to be dissolved, as planned when the group was founded. Jones and Visser's further plans are not known.

Cinematic career

In 2014 he shot the science fiction film Chappie with the South African director Neill Blomkamp , in which Yolandi Visser also stars.

Private

Jones lives in a relationship with his artistic companion Yolandi Visser , with whom he has a daughter named Sixteen Jones, who was born in 2006. However, they do not describe themselves as living in a relationship, Jones once described their relationship as an "ultimate best-friends-forever type of thing" (for example: ultimate best friends forever). In 2010, the couple adopted a then nine-year-old street boy known as Tokkie.
