Assassination attempt on police officers in Dallas on July 7, 2016

In the attack on policemen in Dallas in the US state of Texas , five policemen were killed on July 7, 2016 the assassin Micah Xavier Johnson and injured seven police officers and two other people. The assassination is the heaviest targeted attack on security forces in the United States to date and the event with the highest death toll by the US police since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks .

The attack took place during a demonstration organized by the Next Generation Action Network over two African-Americans killed by police in Louisiana and Minnesota within 48 hours . In these two deaths, videos of which were posted on the Internet, the demonstrators suspected racist and disproportionate police violence . The demonstration was part of the Black Lives Matter movement .

Sequence of events

The assassin Micah Xavier Johnson opened fire from an ambush at around 8:58 p.m. local time (3:58 a.m. CEST ) on police officers present in Belo Garden Park during the demonstration. An eyewitness reports that one of the police officers was shot from very close range when he came around a corner. Five police officers were killed and seven police officers and two other people were injured in the shooting. A suspicious woman was found in a parking garage.

Johnson threatened that explosives were placed in the parking garage. At least one suspicious item was secured by a police bomb disposal unit . Micah Xavier Johnson was 25 years old at the time of the crime and lived in Mesquite . The United States Army announced that Johnson was a reservist from March 2009 to April 2015 and had attained the rank of Private First Class . His Military Occupation Specialty (MOS) was the carpentry and masonry trade . From November 2013 to July 2014 he was posted to Afghanistan . According to the Dallas Police Chief David Brown, Johnson said he wanted to kill white people. Various expressions of sympathy for radical black movements such as Black Power , Black Liberation Army and New Black Panther Party are documented by Johnson . When his home was searched, rifles and other weapons, paramilitary material, bomb-making accessories, protective vests, ammunition, a handbook for armed struggle and Afro-nationalist literature were found.
