Martika
Martika (* 18th May 1969 as Marta Marrero in Whittier , California ) is an American singer and actress of Cuban descent. In the summer of 1989 she had her greatest success with the title Toy Soldiers , which reached the top of the US charts .
Background and career
As a child, Martika was in front of the camera as Gloria on the show Kids, Incorporated ( Disney Channel ). In 1982 she played one of the orphans in the musical Annie . From then on she was often seen in the children's TV program of the station.
In the fall of 1988, Martika released More Than You Know, the first single that made her way into the top 20. With her second release, Toy Soldiers , she jumped to number 1 on the US charts in mid-1989 . In 1990 Martika wrote the song Blue Eyes Are Sensitive to the Light for the soundtrack of the feature film Arachnophobia . But because the producers didn't like her voice, Sara Hickman sang the title in the film.
In 1991 the US musician Prince wrote some songs for Martika. The album Martika's Kitchen resulting from this cooperation was not commercially successful in the USA , but the single Love… Thy Will Be Done became a radio station favorite. In the 1990s, Martika tried to advance her acting career, but to no avail.
In 2003 she founded the band Oppera with her husband, the musician Michael Mozart . In early 2005, her song Toy Soldiers was sampled by Eminem ; With Like Toy Soldiers , the American rapper reached number one in the UK charts .
