The KamAZ-6540 was developed in 1996 based on the KamAZ-65115. The frame was lengthened and an additional steerable front axle was installed. This is how the first series production truck from KAMAZ with four axles was born. The payload was increased by 3.5 tons to 18.5 tons, and the curb weight also increased as a result of the conversion.
When exactly the series production began is not entirely clear. At least from mid-2001, however, the vehicle was regularly available for purchase. In early versions, engines from in-house production by KAMAZ were installed. Slightly different V8 diesel engines of the type KamAZ-740 were used, which produce 260 HP (191 kW) to 280 HP (206 kW). These engines have a cubic capacity of 10.85 liters and meet the EURO 3 emissions standard at the most. Another in-house product, the KamAZ-154, was used as a transmission. This is a five-speed gearbox, which is followed by a two-stage reduction.
The current version uses an in-line six-cylinder diesel engine from Cummins Engine . The engine develops 298 hp (219 kW) with a significantly smaller displacement of just 6.7 liters. A nine-speed gearbox from the German company ZF Friedrichshafen is used as the transmission . The vehicle is designed for local traffic and has no sleeping space and only a relatively small tank.
In addition to the tipper version, KAMAZ has also been building chassis for a long time. These are used for special structures such as fire engines or mobile cranes.
