In 2004, KAMAZ presented a new tractor unit under the type designation KamAZ-65225 at a technical fair in Moscow. It is not clear exactly when series production began. However, the vehicle was officially offered by the end of 2005 at the latest. It is based on the chassis of the KamAZ-6522 tipper and also uses the same engine as of 2016.

The KamAZ-65225 is able to pull trailers with a total weight of 64 tons. This corresponds to a total weight of the articulated truck of just over 75 tons. Both road and off-road tires were installed. For operations away from paved roads, there are large single tires on all axles, alternatively double tires on both rear axles. As of 2016, only the version with road tires will be offered as standard.

A motor produced in-house by KAMAZ is used to drive the tractor unit. The diesel engine with a displacement of almost twelve liters and eight cylinders has an output of 400 hp (294 kW). The maximum torque is around 1800 Newton meters. A supplier part from the German company ZF Friedrichshafen is used as the transmission . It has eight gears and an off-road reduction, which means that 16 gears are effectively available. It is switched by hand.

The truck is also used by the Russian armed forces , including as an armored transporter.
