Hans Hofmann (librarian)

Hans Hofmann (born May 28, 1890 in Möckern near Leipzig , † March 2, 1979 in Dresden ) was a German librarian.

Life

Hofmann was born the son of a doctor. After attending school at the Humanist Gymnasium in Leipzig, he studied philosophy and history at the universities in Munich and Leipzig . He received his doctorate with the dissertation Hofrat and Landlord Chancellery in Meissnian-Albertinian Saxony from the 13th century to 1548 as Dr. phil. In 1920 he successfully completed the librarianship school at the University of Leipzig with a degree in librarianship. He then worked at the Saxon State Library in Dresden, where he worked to promote the care and protection of the homeland. His focus was on landscaping in Saxon Switzerland . From 1942 to 1944 he worked at the Kraków State Library, then returned to Dresden. On February 13, 1945 he witnessed the destruction of this city , where he was acting director of the library of the Technical University .

At the end of October, he was dismissed from the public service due to his NSDAP membership. From then on he worked as a library assistant, then as a freelancer at the Ministry of Construction of the USSR and finally until 1971 as an employee of the library of the State Museum for Mineralogy and Geology in Dresden.

In 1948, Hans Hofmann organized the first course in local history at the Volkshochschule Dresden. From 1953 he was instrumental in setting up a natural history cabinet in the youth hostel at Hohnstein Castle . At the same time he was involved in setting up the exhibition on the Hohnstein concentration camp .

Hofmann worked as a mountaineer and geologist. Its mineralogical collection comprised approx. 720 levels .

From 1960 to 1964 he was editor of the Postreiter mountain calendar.

Hoffmann died in Dresden in 1979 and was buried in the Weißer Hirsch forest cemetery.
