Production of the KamAZ-65115 began in 1995 when the third generation of KamAZ trucks was introduced. As the successor to the KamAZ-55111 , it mainly had a higher payload of 15 tons instead of the previous 13. The KamAZ-740 engine was carried over from its predecessor with an output of 240 hp (176 kW). In 1996 a four-axle version was introduced, which has been built since then as the KamAZ-6540 .

As of mid-2016, the truck is still being offered by the manufacturer. The vehicles sold under the name KAMAZ 65115-A4 at that time have a revised driver's cab , which also differs significantly in appearance from the previous standard cabs . In addition, engines and transmissions from western suppliers such as Cummins Engine or ZF Friedrichshafen are installed. The output of the tipper rose to 298 HP (219 KW).

Occasionally, bodies other than tipping bodies are also known on the vehicle, for example simple steel platforms . Since 2004 a successor has been built with the KamAZ-6520 , which has a further increased payload of 20 tons. In 2005, serial production of the KamAZ-65117 , a technically related vehicle with a flatbed body, began. The KamAZ-65116 version also exists as a tractor unit.
