Professional career

Jason Sosa grew up with his mother and has two sisters and a brother. He didn't start boxing until the late age of 21, having previously played other sports such as basketball and soccer. After only three amateur fights with one win and two losses, he switched to professional camp in 2009. He had to pay tribute to his inexperience at the beginning of his career when he recorded five wins, three draws and one defeat in his first nine build-up fights.

However, he won his following 13 fights early, including in August 2015 by knockout in the first round against Jerry Belmontes . He fought his most important fight to date in December 2015 against Nicholas Walters (record: 26-0, 21 knockout) and reached a ten-round tie.

On June 24, 2016 he was allowed to box as a challenger for the WBA world championship in super featherweight and defeated the title holder Javier Fortuna (29-0, 21 knockout) by technical knockout in the eleventh round. He won his first title defense on November 12, 2016 by unanimous decision against the Briton Stephen Smith (24-2). The fight took place in Monte Carlo .

In February 2017 he resigned his WBA world title and boxed for the WBO world title on April 8, 2017 in Oxon Hill against Wassyl Lomatschenko , but lost the fight prematurely. In November 2017, he also lost just on points against Yuriorkis Gamboa .

On November 2, 2019, he boxed against Miguel Berchelt for the WBC super featherweight world title, but lost by knockout.

According to the boxing promotion company Top Rank Boxing , his fighting style is considered "hard-hitting, all-action style". His training facility is the Victory Boxing Gym in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
