G-Unit (abbreviation for Gorilla Unit ) is an American hip-hop group from New York City , consisting of rappers 50 Cent , Lloyd Banks , Tony Yayo , Young Buck and Kidd Kidd. The crew's DJ is DJ Whoo Kid .

Foundation and advancement

50 Cent , Tony Yayo , Sha Money XL , Domination and Bang 'Em Smurf founded the group in the New York neighborhood of Jamaica in the borough of Queens in 1998. They were later joined by Baltimore- born Lloyd Banks , who was considered too young when the group was founded had been. He didn't get the shot until 50 Cent was shot and Banks turned out to be a good friend in this situation. Olivia joined in 2005 . In addition, the migrated The Game was replaced by Spider Loc. In the following years, Hot Rod , 40 Glocc , Willy Northpole and Carnegie joined. Through an agreement between the BME Clique and G-Unit, both labels are entitled to release albums with the same artists. The first to benefit is the already famous Lil Scrappy . Willy Northpole left G-Unit in early March 2008 and signed a record deal with DTP, the Ludacris label . The singer Olivia also left the G-Unit in spring 2007.

Eminem contributed significantly to the success of the group . He heard the mixtape God's Plan , offered himself as a producer for the group and was involved in 50 Cents hit album Get Rich Or Die Tryin ' .

When the group had their first successes with mixtapes , Young Buck (born in Tennessee ) joined the group. The first big success came after 50 Cent had hits as solo rappers with Wanksta and In Da Club , which also increased the interest in the group. Tony Yayo experienced this time in prison, as he was serving a prison sentence for illegal possession of weapons and forgery of documents and was only released after the release of the first G-Unit album Beg for Mercy .

In the meantime The Game (from Compton ) belonged to the G-Unit and released his album The Documentary in January 2005 . The album was produced by u. a. Dr. Dre , Eminem and Just Blaze . But after he separated from the group, it looked like this would be his only one from Dr. Dre produced album. An interim reconciliation from him with 50 cents did not last long and in June 2005 the dispute flared up again. However, this was settled in July 2016.

Sha Money XL is now the group's manager and producer. G-Unit has its own sub-label G-Unit Records at Interscope , which works closely with Aftermath Entertainment (Dr. Dre. Label) and Shady Records (Eminem's label). The G-Unit label has two sub-labels: The Infamous Records by Mobb Deep and Cashville Records by Young Buck.

The founding members Bang 'Em Smurf and Domination are now the Silverback Gorillaz .

In April 2008, 50 Cent announced that Young Buck was no longer part of the G-Unit, but was still under contract with G-Unit Records.

50 Cent announced a new G-Unit album in June 2014, which will be released in autumn of the same year.

"Beef" with competitors

The G-Unit is known for often producing beef (in German: dispute), i.e. usually verbal disputes that involve e.g. B. by insults (" disses ") on records to have with other rappers.

So it came to conflicts and the like. a. with Nas , Ja Rule , Joe Budden , Fat Joe , Jadakiss , P. Diddy and The Game , who later launched a regular campaign against his former employer G-Unit called G-Unot . He signs The Game autograph cards with Fuck 50 Cent followed by his name. The Game released the mix-tape Ghost-Unit at the end of 2005, which contains many disstracks regarding 50 Cent and the G-Unit, as well as a 15-minute freestyle track called 300 Bars & Runnin ' . 50 Cent went on the offensive in the summer of 2006 and said that he would "bury" his enemies . He made this announcement earlier to Ja Rule. Thereupon Snoop Dogg interfered and defended The Game, because this, like himself, comes from the West Coast . The last thing that came about during the 56th NBA All-Star Weekend in Las Vegas was an altercation between Young Buck and The Game, which was stopped by the security guards present.

Dispute in the crew

In April 2007 there were disputes within their own ranks. Olivia had to leave the G-Unit crew because, according to 50 Cent, her “creative potential […] was simply not enough”. There was also the dispute between 50 Cent and Young Buck. Young Buck told a radio station that he wanted to make up with The Game, which was 50 Cent wrong. Then 50 Cent said in an interview with the radio station Hot97 that he no longer wanted to work for his crew members.

However, the entire conflict was denied a short time later by Young Buck, but also by 50 Cent. 50 Cent did this on the US TV show Sucker Free , in which Tony Yayo and Young Buck also appeared. In September 2010, during an interview with the US radio station Shade 45 about the dispute with Young Buck, 50 Cent said that he would start working with him again.
