The Rose is a 1979 pop song written by Amanda McBroom for the film The Rose and performed by Bette Midler . Midler's version won a gold record and a Golden Globe for the best movie song and reached number 3 on the American pop charts .

Cover versions

The track has been covered several times , including by Barbra Streisand , LeAnn Rimes , Bonnie Tyler , Joan Baez , the Kelly Family , the King's Singers and the grunge band Mudhoney . Country singer Conway Twitty's version was a number one hit in the US and Canada country charts in 1983, as was the boy band Westlife's version in the UK pop charts in 2006 .

The lyrics have been translated into several languages, including a Japanese version by Harumi Miyako entitled Ai wa Hana, Kimi wa Sono Tane (愛 は 花 、 君 は そ の 種子) for the film Tears of Memory - Only Yesterday and 1997 a Norwegian version of the singer Kari Bremnes on her album Månestein . German versions were recorded by Joan Baez, Nana Mouskouri , Katja Ebstein , Angelika Milster , Bettina Wegner , Helene Fischer , Peter Maffay and Peter Alexander , among others . Vader Abraham took with him When the panty liner only fits well in 1996 , a parodic version in Dutch and German. There are also purely instrumental interpretations by, among others, Vlado Kumpan for trumpet and James Galway for flute .
