Christian Höppner (* 1956 in Berlin ) is a German cellist , conductor , Secretary General of the German Music Council and former President of the Cultural Council. D. In 2001 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his voluntary work and his commitment to Berlin's musical life as well as the promotion of amateur music . In 2016, Federal President Joachim Gauck awarded him the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class, for his national and international commitment to the development and maintenance of musical life on all levels of society . From March 12, 2013 to March 20, 2019 he was President of the German Cultural Council , whose Vice-President he was previously. In the 16 years of his work on the board of the German Cultural Council, including ten years as Vice President and with two terms of office as President, which is permissible under the statutes, he was involved a. a. six years in the German UNESCO Commission , ten years in the broadcasting council of Deutsche Welle and 15 years as chairman of the RTL media advisory board.

Since 1986 he has been teaching the cello at the Berlin University of the Arts. Christian Höppner is involved in various voluntary activities in national and international organizations.

Career

Höppner received his training as an instrument teacher, music teacher and cellist with subsequent conducting studies at the University of the Arts . He has also been teaching the cello there since 1986. In 1984 he had already taken over the management of the Berlin-Wilmersdorf Music School and, after the administrative reform in 2001 , also headed its successor, the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf Music School . From 2000 to 2004 he was a member of the executive board and vice-president of the German Music Council , and since 2004 he has been its general secretary. He is also Principal Guest Conductor of the Camerata Musica antiqua in Brazil.

Positions

Höppner emphasizes the value of musical education and is particularly committed to inclusion and diversity. His resignation from the advisory board of the Echo music prize made headlines as a protest against the award of the two rappers Kollegah and Farid Bang.

Höppner also occasionally speaks out in the non-musical field. In 2007 he spoke out against the classification of computer games as a cultural asset and publicly acknowledged that he was a proponent of homeopathy .
