Uncovered -

Uncovered ( English for "exposed" or "unprotected") is the third studio album by German DJ Robin Schulz .

Creation and artwork

All pieces on the album were written jointly by Stefan Dabruck , Junkx (consisting of: Dennis Bierbrodt, Jürgen Dohr and Guido Kramer) and Robin Schulz, in collaboration with other changing co-authors. On the previous album Sugar , the three parties worked together on a single piece. Only the two US-American authors Jason Evigan and David Gibson contributed repeatedly, otherwise many authors only worked on individual pieces. The album was produced by Junkx and Schulz as well as other occasional producers such as Jörgen Elofsson , David Guetta , Steve Mac or Sam Martin . The producer trio around Junkx was also largely responsible for mixing the album, they received support from Chris Laws and Dan Pursey, among others. The album was mastered by Monoposto Mastering, under the direction of Roy Recklies and Michael Schwabe. The recordings were made in the Junkx Music Studios in Mülheim an der Ruhr and the Rokstone Studios in London . Uncovered was released under the Tonspiel and Warner Music labels .

On the cover of the album you can see - next to the artist name and album title - Schulz. It is in black and white and only shows Schulz's upper body, in whose sunglasses the light is reflected. The cover picture was shot by the Berlin photographer Maximilian König.

Publication and promotion

Uncovered was first published on September 29, 2017 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The album consists of 18 new studio recordings and is available on CD and download. At the same time, a “Limited Deluxe Edition” was published. In addition to the album on CD, this includes two vinyl records , an MP3 download code, a DIN A2 poster, a 30 × 30 cm photo booklet and an exclusive Robin Schulz slipmat .

In order to promote the album and himself, among other things, Schulz performed live together with James Blunt in prime time during the final show for the twelfth season of Germany's Next Topmodel on ProSieben . In addition, OK was the theme song for the 2017 Red Nose Day donation campaign and thus featured in all of the ProSiebenSat.1 Media Group's commercial breaks . Shed a Light was the theme song of the Bundesliga Saturday conference on Sky Sport Bundesliga and was also played in all commercial breaks.

content

All the lyrics on the album are in English and are written by Stefan Dabruck, Junkx and Robin Schulz, who wrote the pieces together with changing co-authors. On the album there is a song with the Spanish-language title "Un sueno", but this is a purely instrumental piece without vocals. Translated into German, the title means "a dream". Musically, the songs move in the field of electronic dance music . Undercover is Schulz's first album that does not require cover or remix versions. Well-known guest musicians such as James Blunt , David Guetta or Sam Martin as well as unknown guest musicians such as Hugel and Ruxley are represented on the album .

Reviews

The German-language e-zine Plattentests.de rated Uncovered with four out of ten points. Felix Heinecker from the online editorial team is of the opinion that Schulz does not distinguish himself significantly from the competition with this album and that the success only comes from the "Schulz hype". Most of the pieces would be expected to rustle through the auricle like the radio sauce from recent years. But you have to admit that now and then he has "absolutely" bright moments, or "at least" the right guests and ideas. Whether Guetta , Cheat Codes or Schulz himself had the idea for the “jagged” strings in Shed a Light cannot be seen from the cast. But they would make an "already good pop song" a pleasant exception in the otherwise unexciting EDM range. Somewhat surprising is also that Uncovered turns away from the “dance floor” more often than usual in order to seek gentler climes . Higher Ground suddenly breathes “ gospel air”, is “accentuated” by a piano , “swings” into higher “ pathos- consecration” as it progresses. It is better not to listen exactly to the texts of the brand “Generic English for undisturbed ironing”. In between, however, there would be too much brown bread . Blunt proves in OK that his “quacky” organ “doesn't go a bit OK” with the EDM environment. The instrumentals Above the Clouds and Un sueno would provide a bit of variety, but are in themselves only "unexciting laptop afterbirths". Love Me a Little is just Ed Sheeran in bad. Even the unknown guest musicians would not be able to put a stamp on the "generic songs" or would not even try.

Charts and chart placements

Uncovered reached position 11 in the album charts in Germany and was in the top 100 for a total of 34 weeks. In Austria the album reached position 19 in 16 chart weeks and in Switzerland position 12 in five chart weeks. For Schulz this is the third chart success in all three countries. In the US Billboard 200 the album missed a chart entry, but Uncovered was able to place itself on position twelve of the US top dance / electronic albums . It is the third time that Schulz was able to place an album on this chart list.
