Nils Frahm (born September 20, 1982 in Hamburg ) is a German pianist and composer . He became known for his combination of neo-classical elements with minimalist electronic sounds and his unconventional approach. As a solo artist, he collaborates with several musicians such as Anne Müller , Ólafur Arnalds , FS Blumm and Woodkid . Nils Frahm lives and works in Berlin .

life and work

Frahm received an early introduction to music in which he dealt with works by classical and contemporary composers. During his childhood, he received piano lessons from Nahum Brodski, a student of Alexander Borissowitsch Goldenweiser and Grigori Romanowitsch Ginsburg . Nils Frahm owed another important influence to his piano teacher Karin Gerken, from whom he also got his Fender Rhodes .

Today Nils Frahm works as a composer and producer in his studio Durton, founded in Berlin. In his performances, Frahm uses a Fender Rhodes and a Juno synthesizer in addition to the piano , and he also creates samples and loops of his music with a computer.

After the successful solo piano works Wintermusik (2009) and The Bells (2009), the album Felt was released in 2011. This was followed by the solo synthesizer EP Juno and “Screws” (2012), the latter a birthday present for fans that Frahm picked up while recovering from a thumb injury. In 2013, Juno Reworked was released , with contributions from Luke Abbott and Clark.

Spaces appeared in 2013 . In the same year Frahm published his first music volume entitled Sheets Eins .

In 2015, Nils Frahm launched “Piano Day”. The worldwide celebration of the piano and piano music is celebrated on the 88th day of the year - corresponding to the 88 piano keys. The aim is to create a platform for piano-related projects in order to promote the further development of the musical dimensions of the piano and to share the joy of playing the piano. The first project initiated by Piano Day in 2015 was the construction of the largest piano in the world - the model 450 by piano maker David Klavins . In contrast to the horizontally built classical concert grand, the 4.50 meter M450 is built vertically over two floors and weighs almost a ton.

In August 2015, Nils Frahm's long-term collaboration with Icelandic producer Ólafur Arnalds culminated with the release of Collaborative Works , which included the EPs Loon , Life Story Love and Glory and Stare , made between 2012 and 2015, and the pieces from the improvised audio recording of the 46- minute studio film Trance Frendz .

In the same year Frahm published the music for the feature film Victoria (director: Sebastian Schipper ). When German Film Prize was awarded Music for the Motion Picture Victoria the award for best film music. In 2016 Nils Frahm collaborated with Yoann Lemoine alias Woodkid and created the soundtrack for the short film Ellis (director JR ). The film tells the story of a refugee on the way to a fear-free future, a new home, presented by Robert De Niro .

The band Nonkeen emerged in 2016 from Frahm's joint sound experiments with his childhood friends Frederic Gmeiner and Sebastian Singwald and released two albums, The Gamble and The Oddments of the Gamble .

In 2016, Sheets Zwei, his second volume of music, was published.
