Heather Woods Broderick (born June 7, 1983 in Searsmont , Maine ) is an American multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter .

life and work

Heather Woods Broderick was born the middle of three siblings in Maine. She moved to rural Oregon with her family when she was 8 years old. She grew up in a musical family. During her school days she learned classical piano and flute , later on guitar and cello .

Alongside her studies, she played in various bands such as Loch Lomond and Horse Feathers. She broke off her studies in 2008 and moved to Europe shortly after the release of her first album From The Ground (2009). Together with her younger brother Peter Broderick , she accepted an invitation from the Danish band Efterklang to play on their European and world tour. This was followed by collaboration with numerous musicians such as Nils Frahm , Blitzen Trapper , Damien Jurado , Laura Gibson and Alela Diane .

After her return to the USA in 2011, Broderick first moved to Brooklyn and came into contact with Sharon Van Etten , who she accompanied on several tours between 2012 and 2019.

After completing her second album Glider (2015), Broderick supported Lisa Hannigan on her "At Swim" tour (2016) as an accompanying musician and singer. She also opened Hannigan's concerts on this tour with her own performance.
Broderick's third album, Invitation , was released in 2019 .

She lives in Pacific City , Oregon .

Musical style

Broderick's music does not follow a fixed style concept, but rather combines many musical influences. Reviewers describe numerous stylistic elements in their second album Glider : Folk, Folk-Pop, Jazz , Dream Pop , 70s-Pop, Shoegaze-Rock , Americana .

Her first album, From The Ground , which she recorded with her brother Peter, is still deeply rooted in folk . Mostly carried by acoustic guitar or piano, the melancholy basic tone of the songs is underlined by string arrangements , which gives them an atmospheric rather than rhythmic character. From The Ground earned its first critical acclaim.

The electric guitar dominates the album Glider . The arrangements are lavish, but sometimes give the impression of weightlessness. The songs remain very melodic and melancholic in their basic tone.

The same applies to invitation. Here the piano is more in the foreground. Supported by strings, synthesizers and this time more cautiously used electric guitars, the songs again seem more airy and atmospheric than compact or rhythmic.
