Pacific City is a census-designated place on Nestucca Bay in Tillamook County in the US state of Oregon . North of the city is the Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area , on the peninsula south of the city is the Bob Straub State Park .

history

In 1845 the cook of an English ship bought some land on the bay and started a fire that got out of hand. Unfavorable winds caused the fire to spread to the coastline, where it raged for several weeks and destroyed 6100 km² of forest. However, the country was not yet settled there by the Europeans, and the local Indian tribes were also severely decimated by the malaria epidemic from 1830 to 1841. An Indian tribe, the Nestugga , who lived from fishing , had to flee to the ocean by canoe. Only a heavy rain put out the flames. The first settlers came to the area in 1854, and in 1876 this Indian tribe, which consisted of only 200 people, was resettled on the Siletz River .

In 1886 a canning factory was established to process the salmon from the bay. Other branches of the economy back then were logging and dairy farming. In 1893 Thomas Malaney founded Ocean Park, which was destroyed by a flood in 1894 and later rebuilt on higher ground. Many buildings, including the Sea View Hotel, were subsequently built for visitors from the Willamette Valley . In 1909 the name was changed to Pacific City due to the likelihood of confusion with Ocean Park (Washington). In 1926 industrial fishing was stopped due to overfishing. Until the Great Depression , tourism was the main source of income for the residents.
