The Atsumi Line ( Japanese 渥 美 線 , Atsumi-sen ) is a railway line on the Japanese island of Honshū , which is operated by the Toyohashi Tetsudō (Toyotetsu) railway company. In Aichi Prefecture , it connects the city center of Toyohashi with Tahara on the Atsumi Peninsula .

description

Map of the Atsumi Line with unfinished extensions

The Atsumi Line, laid in Cape Gauge (1067 mm), is 18.0 km long and electrified with 1500 V DC . It serves 16 train stations and stops and has a top speed of 85 km / h. The northern starting point is the Shin-Toyohashi station , which is right next to the larger Toyohashi station . There is a track connection to the parallel Tōkaidō main line , which however requires several maneuvers and is therefore hardly used.

First, the route follows the Tōkaidō main line in a south-easterly direction and then turns south to cross it and then immediately pass under the Tōkaidō Shinkansen . Shortly after the Koike train station is the only tunnel with which a busy main road is crossed. After bridging the Umeda River, the route turns to the southwest and later to the west. The Mikawa-Tahara terminus is roughly in the middle of the Atsumi Peninsula .

Trains

Trains on the Atsumi Line generally run from 6 a.m. to after 11 p.m. Fixed 15-minute intervals are offered throughout the day. All trains travel the entire route, and train crossings are possible at eight locations.

Since 2000 the fleet has consisted of ten three-part multiple units of the 1800 series. They were manufactured by J-TREC, are set up for one-man operation and are based on the 7200 series of the Tōkyū railway company . Every multiple unit has been painted in a different color since 2013; each of these symbolizes a flower or blossom occurring on the Atsumi Peninsula.

history

A group of local businessmen applied for a concession to build an electric branch line from Toyohashi to Fukue on the western tip of the Atsumi Peninsula and was awarded this in April 1921. This was followed on March 6, 1922, the establishment of the private railway company Atsumi Dentetsu ( 渥 d 電 鉄 , German "Electric Railway Atsumi"), which began some time later with the construction of the line. Several sections went into operation in quick succession: from Takashi to Toshima on January 22, 1924, from Toshima to Kambe on March 8, 1924, from Shidanguchi to Takashi on April 25, 1924, from Kambe to Mikawa-Tahara on June 10, 1924 , from Hanada to Shidanguchi on May 1, 1925 and from Mikawa-Tahara to Kurokawabara on April 10, 1926. The northern terminus of Hanada was only provisional. This changed on October 1, 1927, when the railway line could be extended by around four hundred meters to Shin-Toyohashi station after the necessary land had been acquired .

Due to a lack of money, the Atsumi Dentetsu could never tackle the construction of the section between Mikawa-Tahara and Fukue, so that the concession expired in October 1937. On September 1, 1940, the railway company went into the possession of the competing company Nagoya Tetsudo . During the Pacific War , the Imperial Japanese Army concentrated its research facilities on the western tip of the Atsumi Peninsula. It was planned to develop this with a railway line from Kurokawabara, which is why the Ministry of Railways began with surveying work; at a later date, the existing line was to be nationalized. However, due to the course of the war, this never happened. The government was even forced to shut down the section between Mikawa-Tahara and Kurokawabara on June 5, 1944 and then dismantle the rails in order to use them in more strategically important locations.

As part of a restructuring within the Meitetsu group , the newly formed company Toyohashi Tetsudō took over on October 1, 1954 the operation of the Atsumi line. It offered express trains during rush hour from 1965, but abandoned them twenty years later. On February 1, 1984 it stopped the freight traffic. With the introduction of new railcars on July 2, 1997, the contact wire voltage was increased from 600 V to 1500 V. In 2013, the Mikawa-Tahara station received a new reception building, designed by the renowned architect Tadao Andō .
