Lovato first drew attention to the joint production by posting a photo of the music video on her Instagram profile on October 21, 2017. Fonsi commented “What is Demi ...” and later published a behind-the-scenes picture on his own Instagram profile with the description “Done! It's in the can ”, to which Lovato replied“ Hola Fonsi ”.

On November 1, 2017, MTV News announced that the collaboration would be titled Échame la culpa and that it would be a song Fonsi would have sung during his live shows that summer. In an interview with Billboard at iHeartRadio Fiesta Latina in Miami, Fonsi described the song as "a fun song, a fun record". He also announced that the song would premiere in two weeks. At Viva Latino he described the lyrics as "very joyful" and that they had worked a lot with "the pun, the famous cliché of 'It's not you, it's me'".

In a clip shared by Billboard on November 13, 2017, Lovato and Fonsi could be seen talking on the phone via FaceTime and discussing details about their collaborations. On November 14, 2017, Lovato announced the release date on social media and shared an excerpt of the song that contained her part it tracks, while Fonsi posted a picture of himself lying on a bed next to three pillows lies. On these are parts of the lyrics.

On November 17, 2017, Fonsi posted a photo showing two trucks on which he and Lovato can be seen with two quotes. They said “¿Qué pasa Demi?” (German: “What is up, Demi?”) And “Hey Fonsi”.

Content and music

The song is based on 4/4 time and the tempo is 96 bpm . After a short intro with Luis Fonsi and Demi Lovato calling out to each other, the first verse begins, in which both performers can be heard. Then the refrain begins. Both parts are designed in Spanish. An English verse by Lovato follows, but Fonsi can be heard in the background. After another chorus, Fonsi takes on a slightly modified version of it, which introduces a second iteration of Lovato's English-speaking part. The song ends with both chorus parts, which are repeated one last time.

The lyrics describe the lyrical self that tries to take the blame for the failure of a relationship. Both sides of the relationship or roles are conveyed through the two voices. With the onset of the second voice, it becomes clear that the second person is also asking you to blame them.

"No eres tú, no eres tú
No eres tú, soy yo (soy yo)
No te quiero hacer sufrir
Es mejor olvidar y dejarlo así (así)
Échame la culpa"

- Refrain, original excerpt

“It's not you, it's not you.
It's not you, it's me.
I don't want to make you suffer.
It's better to forget about it and leave it at that.
Blame me "

- Refrain, translation

reception

criticism

Jon Caramanica of the " New York Times " described the song as "a happy, solemn number", on the other hand, described Lovato's part as a "choppy Spanish, which is only slightly less comfortable than the bumpy English-speaking half-soul that she elsewhere in the song "MTV News" says Deepa Lakshmin that the song is "just as contagious" as Despacito . Ross McNeilage, also from MTV, described the song as "an absolute powerhouse anthem that is harder than 'Despacito'" and praised "Demi's immaculate Spanish and [Fonsi and Lovato's] undeniable chemistry". Bianca Gracie of Fuse TV saw the song as "a welcome refreshment from the ongoing 'Despacito' takeover".

Commercial win

Échame la culpa could not fully follow the success of its predecessor Despacito . Nevertheless, it achieved numerous number one placements, including in most Latin American countries, as well as in Spain. The top 10 of many European single charts were also in evidence. Among other things, it moved into the top ten places in Germany, Belgium, Italy and Poland. After two months, the track was able to show around 200 million streams on Spotify . Within a very short time, the song also achieved high sales figures, which were decisive for, among other things, platinum awards in Spain and the USA (Latin) as well as gold awards in Canada and Italy.
