At number ten in the US singles charts , it is the artist's third most successful song to date. In October 2011, it received a gold record for 500,000 units sold in the US .

Origin and inspiration

Skyscraper was written by Kerli , Lindy Robbins and Toby Gad , with Gad also serving as the producer . The Estonian singer Kerli said of the song that the three were inspired by a picture while writing. This would have dealt with the apocalypse . She described that the picture depicted a world lying in ruins, in which the only building that had not collapsed was a skyscraper . Hence the name of the song: the English term for "skyscraper" is "skyscraper". Kerli explained that it felt "special" to write this song and that the inspiration came from "a really powerful place." She also said that she, too, feels personally connected to the song because of her own life story. She explained that she comes from a small country in Eastern Europe and that she always had to fight for her dreams. Kerli recorded a demo version of the song before Gad offered this Lovato.

composition

The song is a pop ballad that puts Lovato's voice in the foreground. In the first verse, Lovato sings Skies are crying, I am watching, catching teardrops in my hands / Only silence as it's ending, like we never had a chance , while she is only accompanied by a piano . Later in the song, the piano is supported by drums and background vocals. In the chorus, Lovato sings the lines You can take everything I have / You can break everything I am / Like I'm made of glass, like I'm made of paper / Go on and try and tear me down / I will be rising from the ground like a skyscraper . The song was composed in four-four time with the metronome number (beats per minute) 104. It is written in G major, with the singer's vocal range ranging from G3 to G5.

admission

The song was recorded in Studio City , Los Angeles , in the summer of 2010 . In November 2010, Lovato went to a clinic near Chicago to work through emotional and physical problems. After the singer returned to Los Angeles in spring 2011, she re-recorded the song but decided to use the 2010 version. She gave the reason: “My voice had changed and it just wasn't the same.” Lovato described the recordings as a “cry for help” and also said: “It was very emotional. I had to cry while singing and have never felt so vulnerable. ”For her, the song symbolizes the journey from the person she was before she was admitted to the clinic to the person she is now.

Singer Kerli said in an interview with Seventeen magazine, “The emotions of the song are really conveyed by Lovato. I've always said that songs are messages and performers are messengers. This time there really was no better messenger than Lovato. ”Singer Jordin Sparks can be heard as a background singer on the song. According to Lovato, Sparks recorded the song before she was considered a performer herself. After all, she used Spark's background vocals. Jordin Sparks posted a cover version a few days after the single was released , which was positively received by Lovato.

The song is also very memorable through the collaboration with Kerli and Toby Gad, and you can clearly see the musical influence of the two. In addition, Demi Lovato clearly shows with the song that she not only wants to be a Disney child star , but also an honest pop singer. Grady Smith of Entertainment Weekly felt that the song very inspiring is and Lovato's scratching, shrieking forming singing is great .

Jason Lipshutz of Billboard particularly praised Lovato's vocal range. The AbsolutePunk website particularly emphasized the message conveyed by the song. According to Allmusic , the song is reminiscent of Lindsay Lohan's music album A Little More Personal (Raw) , which was released in 2005 and partly contains autobiographical texts, due to the admirable pursuit of honesty .
