Do not Forget (dt .: Do not forget ) is the debut album of American pop singer Demi Lovato . It was released on September 23, 2008 in America and on April 24, 2009 in Germany. The album was released on the Hollywood Records label , to which Lovato has been under contract since 2008. The songs Get Back , La La Land and Don't Forget were released as singles .

background

In the summer of 2007, Lovato auditioned for a role on the series Sonny Munroe (then Mollywood ) and for Camp Rock on the same day . For the Camp Rock audition , Disney's entertainment chairman Gary Marsh asked Lovato to audition . She sang Christina Aguilera's song Ain't No Other Man and Bob Cavallo, vice president of the record label Hollywood Records, which is part of Disney Music Group, later said that their jaws fell. In early 2008, Lovato signed her first record deal with the Hollywood Records label and shortly thereafter began working with the Jonas Brothers on their debut album. At the time she was just 15 years old.

Emergence

Shortly after Lovato signed her recording deal in the spring of 2008, she began working with the Jonas Brothers on songs for the album. They wrote their first songs while filming the television film Camp Rock . During the Jonas Brothers' When You Look Me in the Eyes tour , they wrote 10 songs together within a week.

About the writing process with the Jonas Brothers, Lovato said the following:

“I wrote (the album) with them and they helped me. They obviously knew the situation, and then we went on the bus at night - the songs just poured out. "

- Excerpt from an interview with Victoria Advocate.com :

"I wrote it with them and they helped me. They obviously knew the situation, and then we got on the bus one night - songs just started pouring out. "

Before the band traveled to Europe to open for Avril Lavigne's The Best Damn Thing tour, they went into the studio with Lovato and John Fields , where they recorded the written songs. The recording of the album only took ten and a half days.

Music genre

The style of the album can be described as pop-rock . She wrote a large part of the songs with the Jonas Brothers, which you can hear very clearly. This has been criticized by some critics because it looks too much like a female copy of the band. Music producer John Fields has previously worked with other Disney artists , including the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus , which you can clearly hear on some of the songs.

About the style of her album, Lovato told MTV :

"I used to write very dark songs in my room every night - about five or six a night - and I was up until five in the morning and my mom would come up and say," So what are you writing? " I played the song for her and she said: "Wow, go to therapy." But (writing) is very therapeutic for me, so I bring it all into my lyrics. You won't necessarily find a lot of it on the album, but hopefully you will on the next album. This is my first (album) so I wanted it to be fun - stuff that you can drive and jam with. "

- Excerpt from an interview with Chris Harris from MTV

"I used to write [really dark] songs every night in my room - like, five or six a night - and I'd be up until 5 in the morning, and my mom would come up and say, 'So what are you writing? ' I'd play her a song, and she'd go, 'Wow - go to therapy.' But it really is therapy for me, so I put everything in my lyrics. You won't necessarily find a lot of that on the album, but hopefully you will on the next album. It's my first one, so I wanted it to be fun - stuff you can drive around in your car to and jam out to. "

One of the particularly rocking songs on the album is the first single Get Back , which is noticeable through the clearly audible use of guitars. According to azcentral.com, the song is reminiscent of singer Tommy Tutone .

Reviews

The critics' response to the album varied. Digital Spy’s Nick Levine said the album sounded like one of the Jonas Brothers with a female voice, even though Lovato’s voice is much stronger. He gave the album 3 out of 5 stars. Stephen Thomas Erlewine from Allmusic stated that it was pure pop for children and rated it 4 out of 5 stars. The Houston Chronicle complained that Lovato's voice sounded "too serious" in some places, but added that 16-year-old Lovato should definitely be allowed to have leeway. Entertainment Weekly explained that Lovato's debut album is an indication that today's musicians rather Ashlee Simpson as of Janis Joplin inspired , and gave the album an average C. Eberhard Dobler of laut.de came to the conclusion usual Disney as: so precise how irrelevant and awarded 2 out of 5 stars.
