Unbroken (German: unbroken ) is the third studio album by American pop and R&B singer Demi Lovato . The recordings began in the summer of 2010 and ended in September 2011, although they were interrupted from November 2010 to January 2011 because Lovato was in hospital. After its release in September 2011, the album debuted at number four in the US and sold around 96,000 times in the first week. In February and March 2012 it was also released in several European countries, including Germany and Great Britain, where it reached number 61 and 45 respectively. It was the first album release by Lovato, which could achieve a chart placement in these countries.

So far, two singles have been released from the album. The first single " Skyscraper ", released in July 2011, reached number ten on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the artist's second most successful song to date. In January 2012, the second release " Give Your Heart a Break " was released, which later rose to number 16 in the US charts.

In terms of musical style, the album is attributed to contemporary R&B and pop music . Elements of pop-rock or power pop that appeared in the singer's earlier works can only be perceived occasionally. This is also reflected in the fact that the guest musicians and producers of the album mostly come from the field of contemporary R&B or hip-hop .

The album was positively received by critics and praised the increased maturity in the artist's music. The vocal advancement of the singer was emphasized. However, there were also voices who questioned the credibility of some of the album's lyrics.

background

In an interview, Demi Lovato explained the differences in the creation of the album compared to the previous albums: She recorded the album in addition to filming her TV series Sonny Munroe , the films Camp Rock and Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam and touring, mostly within a few weeks. For Unbroken, on the other hand, she really was able to take the time to design the album according to her ideas. In August 2010, Lovato accompanied the Jonas Brothers on their Jonas Brothers Live in Concert World Tour 2010 to promote the music of the second Camp Rock film . She left at the beginning of November 2010 to go to inpatient treatment due to emotional and physical problems . Work on the album was interrupted until she left the clinic. As a result, the publication date planned for spring 2011 was postponed to late summer. In April 2011, she also announced her departure from the TV series Sonny Munroe in order to concentrate fully on her music career.

Emergence

Start of production

In July 2010, Lovato announced on Twitter that she was recording the first track for her new album with producer Dapo Torimiro . This was the song "Yes I Am". A total of about 20 songs were recorded for the album, including a song partially sung in Spanish. Worked on the album together with Dan Pringle and Leah Haywood from Dreamlab Productions , Tim James and Antonina Armato from Rock Mafia , Kara DioGuardi and the German Toby Gad as producers and / or songwriters . In addition, the frontman of the band OneRepublic , Ryan Tedder , and Timbaland were involved in the creation of the album. In her role as a visiting writer for Seventeen Magazine , Lovato shared the feeling of being back in the studio and continuing to work on her music. For example, she said that she loved being back in the studio and that the recordings were very "therapeutic" for her. She also explained her goals with the new album. For example, she wanted to be an inspiration for girls who also suffer from an eating disorder or self-harming behavior , which, she said, can also be heard in their music. She especially highlighted the first single from the album, " Skyscraper ".

Cooperation with well-known producers and artists

In July 2011 Lovato flew to Miami to work with Timbaland in the studio. In January of the same year, while Lovato was in a clinic, he posted a song on the Internet that he would like to record with her for her next album. This action attracted a lot of media interest, especially in the USA. About the collaboration with Missy Elliott , which can be heard on the joint track Lovatos and Timbalands, Lovato said that it was not planned in advance. The rapper would have been in the studio by chance and would have "just asked if she could rap". In a radio interview with Ryan Seacrest , in which her first single " Skyscraper " was presented, Lovato confirmed that there was an R&B singer on her album, although she was not allowed to reveal the artist's name for contractual reasons. As a result, there was speculation in the media about Justin Bieber and Chris Brown , but it turned out to be Jason Derulo and Iyaz , respectively . Lovato denied rumors that she was singing a duet with her role model Kelly Clarkson in the same interview. Ryan Tedder, with whom she recorded the song “Who's That Boy”, said of the recording with her that she “completely surprised him. I had no idea how good her voice is. She is one of the best singers I have ever worked with. I mean, she's on par with Kelly Clarkson's vocals. And Kelly has a really good voice ”. Lovato also commented on her feelings about the upcoming release of her third studio album. She described the making of the CD as "exciting" and also said that she was nervous, but still enthusiastic.

Music genre

Back in July 2010, Lovato said that their new album will no longer be fully pop music , but will be more R&B oriented. Also less influences from rock music are to be expected. She named Rihanna and Keri Hilson as inspiration , among others . Guest contributions from artists such as rapper Missy Elliot, R&B musicians Jason DeRulo, and Iyaz and Dev also contributed to a change in style. In July 2011 Lovato himself described that the sound of her new album will be "more mature, but also more fun and lighter". Not all songs have the intensity of “Skyscraper”. The track "All Night Long", on which she can be heard together with the duo Timbaland and Missy Elliott, is "flirtatious and fun, not too grown-up, but grown-up enough and thus the exact opposite of Skyscraper". While recording the album, Lovato decided to collaborate with other music producers and songwriters and work on their sound. While their previous albums had mostly been produced by the Jonas Brothers and John Fields , they had no influence on the creation of their third studio album. For this she worked with Rock Mafia , Ryan Tedder and Timbaland , the latter being known for his strong hip-hop and R&B- oriented style. Lovato also changed when writing the songs, for example she is listed as songwriter for only five of the 14 songs, whereas she was involved in the writing process for almost all of the songs on the albums Here We Go Again and Don't Forget . Overall, the sound of the album was produced very radio-friendly, the song "Skyscraper" is the artist's first ever played on contemporary hit radio .

Cover design and booklet

Lovato published the cover of the CD on August 19th, one day before her 19th birthday, as thanks for the many birthday congratulations that she had already received in advance. It is kept in light tones, the title of the album and the name of the singer are in red-brown color in the top left or at the bottom of the cover. Demi Lovato herself is the center of the picture, although only her upper body is shown. She wears a fur vest and dark red lipstick. Your gaze slides into the distance. In the booklet there are some pictures in a similar atmosphere, as well as the lyrics and other information about the pieces of music. In addition, an obligatory but very detailed acknowledgment has been written at the end of the booklet.

The photos of the booklet were taken by Hilary Walsh , David Snow acted as creative director and Enny Joo as art director .

Publication and promotion

Lovato and one of her dancers during their concert in September

The album was released on September 20th on Hollywood Records . It was released with 15 tracks, including a remix of the song Skyscraper . On October 11, 2011, a so-called “International Edition” of the album was released in Latin America , which also includes “Rascacielo”, the Spanish version of the song “ Skyscraper ”.

The album was particularly advertised on Twitter and Facebook . Demi Lovato posted many photos, reported on studio recordings and the creation of the album. She also revealed the title of the album on August 11, 2011 on Twitter. In live chats, she answered questions from fans and revealed the release date of her third album. She also advertised with the help of some live appearances, for example she appeared at the Do Something Awards, the ALMA Awards and American Idol . She also announced two concerts in late August for September 17th in New York and September 23rd in Los Angeles . Both concerts were sold out within ten minutes. A few days before the album was released, Lovato posted two tracks from her album ("All Night Long", "Who's That Boy") and a video called "A Letter To My Fans" on Facebook, in which she talks about her time in the clinic. The video shows them around their appearance at the ALMA Awards. You can also hear the song "Fix a Heart" from the album.

After her return from the clinic, the album was often dubbed as a "comeback album" in advertising, and the media sought a connection to Lovato's private life in many of the songs. The singer herself also used this phrase for her album, as it symbolizes a new beginning in her life.

Lovato was a guest on Ellen DeGeneres and Jimmy Fallon's talk shows during the album's release week, promoting her album.

Skyscraper

Skyscraper was the first single from the album. It was advertised as a so-called comeback single and released in Australia , Canada , New Zealand , Slovakia and the USA , among others . The song was released on July 12 and officially featured on Ryan Seacrest's radio show. On the night of its release, the ballad reached number 1 on the US iTunes charts and 10 on the official Billboard charts (176,000 downloads / 1st week). "Skyscraper" was also published as a Spanish version ("Rascacielo"). Since “ This Is Me ” from the soundtrack of the first Camp Rock film, the title is the most successful in Lovato's career to date. In October 2011 the single received a gold record in the USA for 500,000 units sold, and in April 2012 it achieved the status of a platinum record there , which corresponds to 1,000,000 records sold.

Give Your Heart A Break

On July 22, 2011, Lovato announced on her Twitter page that the song Who's That Boy , on which she can be heard with Dev , will be the second single from her album. On November 28, 2011, however, Lovato announced that another song would be released instead, Give Your Heart A Break . The track was released in January 2012 and sung live at the 2012 People's Choice Awards . In April the single debuted at number 70 on the Billboard Hot 100 and later reached its highest position in the US at number 16.

Other chart placements

Many of the songs on the album made it to the iTunes charts, which led to the songs Fix a Heart and Unbroken reaching number 68 and 98 on the official Billboard charts.

success

Commercial win

The album, which has been available for pre-order since September 6, 2011, reached high ranks in the American iTunes charts even before it was officially launched , including second place in the pop album category. When the album was released on the night of September 20, 2011, it reached number one on the iTunes charts across all genres in America. The album also took first place in the pop album category. On September 28, it was announced that the album would be number four on the American charts with 96,000 units sold. In the second week, the album dropped ten places to 14th.

In February 2012 the album was also released in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It then went into the charts in these three countries, something that no other studio album Lovato had achieved before. In Germany it reached position 61, in Austria position 50 and in Switzerland even position 29. After the release in March 2012 the album also reached a position in the British charts. This had also not succeeded in a Lovato album before. Here it rose to rank 45.

The album received average reviews overall. Becky Brain from the music block Idolator, for example, rated the album as good and particularly praised Lovato's voice. The kind of development between their albums is remarkable. MTV called "Unbroken" a "perfectly mature album, in which the ballads on the album in particular show Lovato's development as an artist, both lyrically and personally." The American tabloid Entertainment Weekly rated the album on a scale from A to F with B + and wrote that it was "of course a tough year" for Lovato. "But as Rihanna could tell her, bad years sometimes turn into great songs." The newspaper drew a comparison with Rihanna's album " Rated R ", which was published a few months after the violent confrontation with her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown and was very positively received by the press. The Rolling Stone gave the album 2 out of 5 stars, together with the finding that the album is mature enough. Allmusic.com wrote of the album that it is "half full of party songs, but both these and the ballads are very implausible due to various events in Lovato's personal life". Ultimately, the website gave the album 2.5 stars out of 5.

Remarks

  1. Every other album I haven't had time to really take my time and craft it like I really wanted to do because I was finding spare time between a television show, and movies, and touring, and then all over again, ”she said . “I've worked on (the album) for the past year and really gone hard over the past few months, but you can definitely tell that I took my time with this record.
  2. a b c I love being back in the studio! It's been very therapeutic to be able to express my feelings and talk about who I really am, through my music. It also helps that I've been lucky enough to work with such talented people on the record so far! With my new album, I'm hoping to provide inspiration for girls everywhere who are going through the same issues I've faced. I think this will come through in a lot of the material. My first single is really special to me - to me it symbolizes my journey from the person I was to the happy healthy person I am today, and the fact that people are able to rise above anything, despite the odds. I'm so excited to share all of this with you guys! The experience has been amazing so far and I'm really enjoying the whole process. There are definitely a lot of emotions that go into making an album. I feel blessed, inspired, and nervous with anticipation, but mostly, I feel excited about the future, and about sharing this new record with my fans!
