Brenda K. Starr

Brenda K. Starr (born October 15, 1966 in Manhattan , New York City ), actually Brenda Kaplan, is an American singer who came from pop music ( dance-pop ) to salsa music . She became best known in the 1980s for her pieces in the style of freestyle music .

Career

Brenda Kaplan was born to a Puerto Rican mother and a Jewish father. Her father was an organist and played in the band Spiral Starecase in the 1960s. Brenda K. Starr began a singing career and had "I Still Believe" and "What You See is What You Get" in the Billboard Top 100. The song "Sweet Surrender" was part of the soundtrack to the film License to Drive. In the late 1980s, Brenda K. Starr worked with Mariah Carey . In 1984 she made an appearance in the breakdance film Beat Street . Due to falling sales, her record deal with Sony / Columbia Records was not renewed. In order to support her family, Brenda K. Starr worked part-time in a shopping mall in New Jersey . She learned Spanish to continue working on her singing career and changed her style to Salsa, Latin Pop and Tropical Music. The change in direction made her successful again and was nominated for the Billboard Latin Music Award in 2006 with “Atrevete a Olvidarme”.
