This Was is the first studio album by the British progressive rock - band Jethro Tull . It was recorded in 1968 at Sound Techniques Studio in Chelsea , London and released in the UK the same year (Island ILPS 9085). It peaked at number 10 on the UK charts and number 62 on the Billboard 200 . In contrast to the later albums, the songs are not exclusively written by singer and band leader Ian Anderson . The guitarist Mick Abrahams played a major role in the writing of the pieces. However, he left the band after this album and was replaced by Martin Barre .
style
Stylistically, This Was is very inconsistent. The palette ranges from the blues with acoustic instruments (Some Day the Sun Won't Shine for You) to the cover of a jazz track by Roland Kirk (Serenade to a Cuckoo) with the flute playing typical of Ian Anderson to progressive rock (My Sunday Feeling and Beggar's Farm) , in which the later Jethro Tull echo. On the piece Move on Alone , Mick Abrahams can also be heard as the singer instead of Ian Anderson; the wind arrangements are by David Palmer .
